When in S and manually shifting, to go back to auto-shift you don't have to move the lever back to D. Just hold either the + or - for about 2 seconds and it goes back to automatically shifting while remaining in S.
No way!

Headed to work in a bit. Must try this.

I've never had a truck with S mode before, or a vehicle which S mode made so much difference.

I use it when I'm in town, or passing a TGD truck.
Now you're just being silly Jay. Everyone knows that the added HP with a damper, you're not getting past a truck with a TGD, even in S mode. See you'd know this if you had one. ?

I resemble that comment!

Seriously though, Smode is awesome on the Ranger. My truck is heavy and slow so Smode or not it's not fast and will never perform great on road. A Scab built for street performance would be great fun though.

I don't understand why the gear you are in is not always displayed. I have to turn it on in D and can't display is in S unless I go into manual mode.
Also what about using S and "tow haul" at the same time? It won't display the gear.
Of course it still has a Tach.
I belive if in tow mode & you shift to spot it disables tow mode. That has been my experience as I can tell by the change in RPM'S. For the most part for me I have changed my style of driving. If I want zip I use Sport. I have been driving mostly in D in tow mode which gives me better response than D but not as much zip as Sport. If I encounter roads that are hilly & windy I shift to Sport. Hills & curves end I shift back to D in tow mode . Doing this I have actually seen an increase in fuel mileage. Works for me. One advantage of having tow mode. :like:

I use D in town so the engine stop works at lights.[you will not believe what this does to the average.
For most driving [country below 60mph] I use tow / haul [keeps the engine from lugging down to
much.
Then D on the freeway [to get the upper over drive gears]
Doing this , I have seen very good milage + little use for S...
Try to keep the engine ABOVE 1500 rpm but below 2000 rpm.
D runs the engine to slow.[ good for EPA bad for mileage]

I just put it in D and drive. The only time I mess with anything is when I may force a downshift (any one of several methods available). to use compression on some downhills to reduce brake wear.

What is my MPG? I have no idea and don't really care. It is whatever it is. I didn't buy a truck with any goal of getting some sort of mpg average that I could brag about.

I have tried S mode and Trailer tow mode to see what they do and they do have some usefulness, but not to the point to where I want to be always switching between the modes just to boost my avg mpg by a few points. I will just drive and enjoy the ride.

Can you shift into sport mode while the truck is in motion, or do you have to stop and shift?

Like Peter949 said, anytime. I also take my foot off the gas when I change to/from Sport /Drive modes.

I also take my foot off the gas when changing to/from 2WD/4WD.

Not sure if I have to in either of these situations but I feel it's less stress on drivetrain. Just me.

Thanks for the info, I have 5k miles on my truck and never used sport mode till today and was blown away. Just wanted to make sure I wouldn’t destroy my transmission in the future.

It's great where you need a little extra power to pass a slow vehicle or climb a hill etc. Comes in handy for some spirited driving too! Add a tune and be prepared for some smiles per mile.
