Fuel in oil

Here is mine, Joe. This is my second Blackstone test. My fuel dilution dropped to 3.3% from 3.8% but there were far fewer miles on this oil compared to previous. My Ranger behaves perfectly on longer road trips but during short trips around town it rises. I don't think it is bad injectors or HPFP in my Ranger. He doesn't like short trips and especially not in Minnesota winter where the oil does not have time to reach operating temperature.

This is purely speculation on my part, but I think the reason we are not getting satisfactory results from Ford (and dealerships) is because they don' t have a solution for this problem except in the less common cases where it is a bad injector or HPFP. I don't think this problem is going to be solved until they introduce dual fuel injection like they did for the 2.7 and 3.5 Ecoboosts. I suspect the folks that don't have this problem do few short town trips or there Rangers reside in hot/warm climates.

I'm really curious if the 2.3 Mustangs or 2.3 Explorers have this problem. If not, what is different with our Rangers?

I'm going to try and quit stressing about it and just change my oil more frequently and use cheaper semi-synthetic oil. No since using more expensive full synthetic if I am going to change it every 3000 mores or so.

Alan, thank you for sharing your Blackstone report. With you data, I now have 12 entries in my spreadsheet!
I think everything you have said makes a lot of sense. I am sure if Ford had a solution, they would provide it to customers that are reporting this problem. I have read other threads about dual fuel injection being the solution, but I am not sure our systems can be retrofitted to that extreme? I also agree with you that changing the oil more often is the best insurance since we all want to protect our investment.

I asked that same question back In this thread . Asking if any of the Mustang 2.3 owners had this problem. I asked if they had the same HPFP setup as the Ranger. Nobody ever answered my question! I know there's some differences in our engines to adapt them for truck use!

May not be many forum members here that also own a Mustang or Explorer. Might have to go to one of their forums and ask.

I wish our fuel dilution numbers looked as good as theirs, at least for those of us having issues with our Rangers. I cannot understand the difference

OK @createaneutron, I've attached my latest oil analysis from Blackstone. It includes the original factory oil sample on the right hand column and my latest oil sample on the left column.

Surprisingly, my percentage of fuel in the oil dropped from 2.8% to 0.5%. I don't know if it's attributable to the 5w-30 Amsoil Signature Series oil I'm using or just that this truck does not have an issue. Baffling since I smell fuel around the vehicle still.

Thanks for posting. Interesting read and reinforces my plan for more frequent oil changes. I don't put a lot of miles on my Ranger (5000-6000 per year) so a couple of oil changes per year is not a big deal for me but would be for others.

My neighbor told me that he just spent $750.00 to clean the coked up intake valves on his Chevy Impala (GDI 3.6 V6). It had about 60,000 miles. I believe this is the same engine in the Colorado/Canyon twins.

Shea, same question, mostly longer highway trips or do you have short trips also? In Southern CA you have warmer temperatures and that likely plays a role also.

I wanted to update everyone from my last post, asking for owners with fuel dilution issues to send me their Blackstone report so I can compile the information in a spreadsheet. My hope is having this data in one document might allow us to have a stronger voice with Ford.
To date I have 11 entries in the spreadsheet. Obviously, the more the better; data is power. So, please consider sending me your numbers to be counted! Also, please include your Customer Complaint or Warranty Claim case number if you have it. Opening a case with Ford corporate is hopefully another way to get their attention.

I have 713 miles and my oil level is about 1/8 inch above the full Dot and does smell like gas. At 500 miles it was at the full Dot.
I make sure I have a warm engine, then wait 15 minutes after I stop the engine to check (following the manual directions).
I plan on taking to the dealer next week to tell them about the issue and get my first oil change. I will be getting the blackstone test done as I’m awaiting the kit to arrive. I will share my results and what the dealer says.

3/4 of my driving is 20-25 mile there and back round trip hwy. The rest is around town stuff. The first analysis was with the factory oil from May thru July. Relatively warm months. Plus, the first 1300 miles were from driving the truck from Colorado back to SoCal - all hwy. It resulted in a 2.8% fuel dilution.

I then switched to the Amsoil Signature Series which I ran until mid December. I decided to try it because of their claims of 100% LSPI protection. Like I said, I'm not sure if it's the oil or not. All that I know for sure is that the only change I made was the oil.
