My butt was beyond puckering and I hope to never get that close again. Also who knows how accurate the pump was.
Had a Fusion with a 12 gallon tank. Most I ever put in was 12.5 gallons.

Then one day I roll into to my local station with less than a half tank, but more than a quarter. Put in 16 gallons of gas before it clicked off. I looked under the car for a leak - there was none. I went in and informed the manager politely (this was after all a neighborhood establishment) that he might want to look at pump 8 and showed him the receipt. He got all defensive, called me crazy, said I didn't know how big my tank was, told me to get out. I was floored. Here I was trying to do him a favor and he bit the hand that fed him.

So three days later I had lost enough sleep trying to figure out how this was my issue and dropped a dime on his @$$ with the state weights and measures department. They pretty much blew me off too.

Then about two weeks later I go driving by with a full tank of gas from the competitor and all of his pumps were shut down. For a full week they could only sell candy, cokes, coors, and carwashes. Pumps were ripped up and I think they ended up putting new ones in. If not new, they definitely got a new decal wrap. I went back and put in a tank of gas, well about three quarters - 8 gallons on the nose. Whadda ya know about that.

White's University Motors in Laramie Wyoming.

We bought the truck at our local Ford dealer in Colorado. I found the truck on Ford's website in Laramie Wyoming. The dealer in Colorado gave us a car (Chrysler 300) to drive up and bring our truck home. I offered to do this because I didn't want anybody else driving the truck.

I didn't mind it not being full. But they could have at least put enough in it so I wasn't driving on fumes to the gas station. They kind of treated us like we were their "redheaded step children" while we were there too.

"When we picked up our brand spanking shiny new 2019 Ranger SuperCab at the dealership the "Miles To E " display showed "0 " miles of fuel remaining, and the out of fuel chime was ringing."

What kind of dealership hands the keys to a new truck on empty to the buyer. I have never picked up a new vehicle that did not have a full tank of gas.
Filling the tank is part of the $1,195 Destination and Delivery charge.
Probably just an oversight. Your salesperson or the Lot Laddie/Lassie should have filled it before you arrived or while you were in the business office.
But if it is standard practice at that store to "forget" to fill, even if it is a small store, that's a pretty hefty chunk-a change they are pocketing:
  • 15 gallon average for all models X $2.00/gal = $30/vehicle saved X 100 new vehicles delivered/mo. = $3000/month.

Had the opposite happen once upon a time. When I was much yonger, there was a pump at the local gas station that was definitely under-measuring the fuel it was dispensing. My dad first suspected it when he used it, and his hand calculation told him he had gotten incredible MPGs on that tank. When he also appeared to get incredible mileage the second time he used it, he told the guy behind the counter that they should probably have it recalibrated because they're losing money on it, but nothing changed for months. It was only the one pump, but quite a few people around town for figuring it out. It got to the point that people would line up and wait for that pump to come available even if all the others were unoccupied, before finally the station got the issue fixed.

Had that happen in Sioux Falls SD years ago filling my '86 Aerostar. Can't remember the numbers but it took a lot more fuel than normal.

Well, they usually don't bother with the washer fluid or tire pressure either. Too busy giving it a quickie wash and putting shiny crap on the tires...because of course the most important thing is how it looks

Was thinking the same thing. My sales guy went and filled mine up while I was doing finance paperwork.

Pretty simple exercise in determining the size of your fuel tank. Especially for those of us traveling in remote areas. Be aware different outside factors will impact your final fuel reserves, like driving style, terrain, grade, weather so you should figure that in too when getting down to the very end of your fuel supply.

Simply get/use a fuel can that is empty. Fill it with exactly 2 gallons/or 3 of gasoline when you are getting close to the end of you fuel tank. Stow it in the bed of your truck and drive your truck until you run out of fuel. Fill the tank from the fuel can. Drive to a fuel station and fill your tank and subtract 2 gallons/or 3 from your total fill amount. Throw in some swag for the drive on the 2 gallons/or 3 you put in from the fuel can.

Now you have your solution and knowledge for when you are in remote areas far from fuel stations.

That is certainly one way to do it! Although, that can put some wear and tear on you low pressure fuel pump that's submerged in the fuel tank. But to each their own! IMO... if you push your fill ups that far (or are planning on driving in some remote areas), its easier on the vehicle, and your sanity, to just care an extra fuel can or two in the bed.

brand new Costco gas station opened up...got myself in line and fueled up.
i couldnt click it anymore than and extra litre in the tank. it was just not taking much more.
I was so hyped i forgot to see how much it took. but i bet i squeezed in an extra 200km worth.

on the plus side the fuel savings was significant enough that i put in premium. I felt like a rich man today fueling up the Beamer.
immediately i gained 30HP and I'm now getting much better gas mileage. The engine runs smoother and the low end torque is phenomenal. I dont even have a tune or a tailgate damper yet.
I see you added "yet". Changing your mind RP?
