On the trip back and at home. Before we left, someone rolled in horse manure. (again)

Your not going to leave this dog behind!

Or this one.

As soon as we got home, we rolled in our own grass again. Then our favorite neighbor kids came by.

Any body have suggestions for keeping dogs off of the countertops?

We've had a lot of big dogs, but this is the first time we've had this issue.

This guy...

Patrick is about 10 months old and has started to peruse the countertops for snacks.

We're trying to be diligent about food and wrappers left up there but any tips for discouraging this behavior would be welcome.

Currently we simply correct him when he's caught in the act.

We got a retriever like that. We call it the sharknado move. Whole loaf of bread snatched in a NY second. Keep counters clean, reprimand (pen timeout) when bagged and constantly reminding him it’s off limits. We don’t feed our dogs people food ether. They don’t see the difference otherwise.

Those are the steps we're taking now. With the exception of the people food, I'm guilty of that sometimes cause I'm a sucker.

I like the sharknado, fits well as he definitely seems to hunt the countertops, circling like a shark.

I guess I was hoping for a surefire trick like double sided tape on the countertop edges or something. But like most things there probably isn't an easy fix.

My dog's nails aren't the problem. He's covered my truck in fur within 200 miles of owning it. Such is life.

In all honesty ask any trainer and they will tell you if you do feed your dogs people food the training is not very effective. With ours there is no begging while we’re eating or pen time. Never give them scraps after dinner, they think that’s the reward for not begging! So pretty much training treats and daily food rations. And spend quality time with them, or just like kids they start acting up.

I know I should stop but like I said, I'm a sucker.

I'm sure training would be more effective if I didn't. But we do okay.

They don't beg, they do watch from afar, though. And if they do get anything it's after we've ate. And usually in their bowls.

Gonna be pretty hard to stuff that toothpaste back in the tube now. We'll just continue the struggle until he gets it. He's a Pyranese and quite stubborn. More so than our previous St Bernards.

I fully admit we could have better control over our pups. But like children I feel it's a balancing act. The approach has worked well so far through all of our family dogs.

My older Siberian husky Roush lying next to my Ranger of the same name. He's a mellow 13 years old.

My other Siberian husky Kami sleeping above Roush. She's a hyper 1 1/2 years old. But I love her just the same.
