Alot of folks here in Nebraska stay here for summer and Fall then head south.....alot go to Arizona. In fact, my Boss has a nice place in Scottsdale!
We've met a few people here from AZ, one older lady was working in Custer SP. She works part time out here for the summers to get away from the heat, said she's been doing it for years and loves it! I'd love to be a reverse snowbird....?I guess I'd be a sunbird?

Yeah, can see lotsa cool stuff......I wouldn't gamble there! LOL
Cool! I'm not much of a gambler anyways (work to hard to throw it away) but I do like to play Blackjack occasionally when there.

Main St of Deadwood.....a place called the Midnight Star......casino owned by Kevin Costner. Well known for the poorest pay-out in Deadwood but lotsa neat stuff to see from his movies. Also, while Annie is gambling?.......you drink for FREE!
Brian, How much time would you say is needed to see Deadwood? I'm just trying to figure out what time to leave here (Custer) and plan for time up there, it looks like it's about an hour away. Don't try to include any shopping, I'll have to put the brakes on that or we'll need a room overnight. lol

Will be driving back down through Spearfish Canyon on the way home and most likely making a few stops along the way back. We're leaving here Thursday morning so I just didn't want to get back to late as we still have to pack everything up along with all the new souvenirs Annie bought. That could take hours alone.

Deadwood‘s pretty small Dave and each of their “casinos” seem to be the same as each other. When I was there, “working”, they were mainly small slot machine parlours. Costner's restaurant and hotel is pretty cool - the movie memorabilia, including some of the wardrobe pieces, is worth checking out. Don’t do anything rash if you see a gunfight in the street - I think some of these guys work at Rawhide, AZ in the off-season.

You might only spend a couple hours there so you could easily take in Sturgis (15-20 mins away).

I'd say a couple hours to walk around and look. Alot of Deadwood is casinos.....there are some stores to shop but not many. Gambling town! Few good places to eat there.....you'd have plenty of time to see everything in the am.......have lunch.......take Spearfish Canyon south back to Custer in the afternoon.

Hey Dave, thanks for all of the great pictures and comments. I'm old and kind of physically compromised. I'll probably never get the opportunity to experience what you and your sweetheart are doing, but it's great to see you're having fun. Thanks for sharing!

Today I finally did something I've been wanting to do for years, went on a helicopter ride! We've been driving by the company the whole time we've been here and last night we were talking with the manager of the hotel. She said she did it a few years ago and it was great and they take you right up to Crazy Horse and in front of Mt Rushmore so it got me wanting to do it even more now.

The company is Black Hills Ariel Adventure and they have several different packages and I did the Southern Hills Panorama one. It's 35 miles covering the South Central Black Hills, around Crazy Horse, Sylvan Lake, the crest of Black Elk Peak and Mt Rushmore. Not a bad price at $270 and it was well worth every penny of it as the views were amazing getting right up close to Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse. Annie didn't want to go so I almost didn't do it because they have one where that's a 2 seater and another that's a 4 seater. They don't like to have empty seats but he gave me the package without any up charge if I was willing to wait until 2 other couples went. So it was only me and the pilot Noah who was really great and told me the history and pointed stuff out along the way. If you've ever thought about taking one all I can say is do it! What a fun experience.
