Remote trailheads reminds me some 30 yrs back 3 of us ventured into the Colorado backcountry on a 5 day backpack trip, rode in a Bronco II , the owner didn't like to carry the keys so he'd stash them underneath a nearby rock. Well upon our return - no keys, no other cars parked there, we overturned every rock in a 15 ft radius, no keys, apparently some deviate varmit decided to stick it to us and made off with them as we encountered no one else in the area. Exhausted from the trip we had to hike another 15 miles to civilization.
Nowadays you wouldn't have to make the long trek to town to be rescued as the issue is finding a spot to park at many of the overcrowded trailheads. 2 days later the driver's brother brought a spare set of keys from Colorado Springs.
Several time every year someone posts on Facebook for the local page, in the White Mountains, about how they found some keys at the trailhead and to go to the police to get them back. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the car they belong to is still in the parking lot.

Keys are in no way secure, either. They're just more familiar.
Lol, okay....please explain how a key is not secure? A key is a key to start and drive the vehicle. I think it is an extra step in preventing theft, but that's just me....

Well, even with the stupid "chip" in the GM keys they only made 3a few different variations. There was a local w-body meet and a couple of the guys were able to unlock different cars and drive them away.

My mother went grocery shopping and loaded the groceries into someone else's car, got in and started it up and realized it wasn't her car. It was two rows over.

You've really never seen anyone defeat a key lock? Just because you don't know how to do it doesn't mean it will even slow someone down if they have the knowledge and experience to do so. That's been true since before cars were invented, so they don't bother to write news articles about it. Keys just help keep honest (or incompetent) people honest, help people feel like they're doing something when they lock a door, and establish legally that something was intended to have restricted access. An electronic key can accomplish those goals exactly as effectively as a physical key.

Very comprehensive video...I don't think this applies to us regular key version...or does it?
My lariat won’t start/doors won’t unlock if my keys are even on my work bench in my garage next to my truck. Not concerned about it

That's good to hear...sounds like there's enough antidotal evidence to dispel this guys concerns...I don't have a push button so I'm not worried either...

Now that I think of it mine won't either. I leave my keys on the counter which is about 10' from my truck and it won't unlock or start it. Plus when I'm washing it I have to take them out of my pocket because whenever I touch the door handle or even the power washer hits it it will lock/unlock. So I leave them on my toolbox about 6'-7' away and it won't work then.

Even if you did I wouldn't have worried. Anyone getting into your truck would take one look at "mission control" and they'd be scared off and go onto the next one. ?

When it comes down to it, all this electronic security with $200 key fobs is simply not worth the cost.
When that cost is considered against the chance of theft, most people would be better off to risk having the car stolen, especially as the car ages and depreciates and the likelyhood of key replacement and programming etc. goes up.
I've always said... " Cars with glass windows don't need door locks"

They can come steal my new truck. I'll get ACV + 20%. I'll keep buying new cars at that rate.

They'd hear this computer warning, "10 seconds to disarm self destruct, 9, 8, 7..."? ?

That's where the loop of a machine gun over the PA comes in handy. :surprised:

The concern is despite how little of a signal the keys put out, professional thieves are using more and more sensitive equipment to pickup that little signal. In other words, how close you need to put your keys to your truck is a moot point. As their equipment evolves, thieves will be able to pick up the signal from further and further away (and sift through the noise as well). As the guy in the video points out, thieves used to go up to people's front doors with 2 big wands (antennas) to try and pickup the signal from a FOB. Their hardware has evolved since then, and will continue to.

I'm not terribly worried about it, but since I already place my keys in something near my door, I figure I may as well stick them into a faraday box instead, considering how inexpensive they are. I'm not willing to carry my key in a faraday pouch or anything when I'm out, though.
