some do and some do not. the smaller uhaul trailers and tow dollys do not. I think all of the mid to large size have trailer brakes. should hook up to your ranger fine.

Most of em have the surge brakes. You should be fine. Just be sure to use

GEN-Y

as a hitch and you will be good!!

The bigger ones have surge brakes. Smaller ones have no brakes. That said a regular hitch will do just fine. No need to go and spend a few hundred on a special hitch. I used a few different Uhaul trailers on my Ranger and never had any issues

I have towned a few different uhauls over the years. Wether they have surge brakes or not I never noticed an issue with braking. My wife works for them so I enjoy a discount. No need to own a trailer anymore when it is $20 a day for a big flatbed

You'll want to call a uhaul store before you reserve, i tried to order their bigger dual axle enclosed trailer, but when i went to pick it up found out it didn't have surge brakes, and while they would technically let me take it, I couldn't get the insurance since I didn't have a brake controller installed...

I towed their biggest box trailer a few different times. A couple of times were 8 hours one way. Trailers had the hydraulic surge brakes. No issues. While I was towing them with my old POS (English for Nissan) NISMO, everything went well. So with a Ranger you will be golden!

Here's what UHaul has to say on the matter:

"The followingU-Haul trailers are equipped with automatic surge brakes that require no additional wiring: 6x12 Cargo Trailer, 6x12 Utility Trailer, 6x12 Open with a Ramp trailer, most of our Tow Dollies and all of our Auto Transports. Our small and medium trailers are not equipped with brakes."

Source

I've rented their largest enclosed trailer multiple times. They've always come equipped with surge brakes and I had no issues towing with my Ranger with no brake controller and an aftermarket hitch.

I haven't towed a U-Haul trailer yet, but I've towed a small enclosed trailer which was not equipped with brakes; I used the S-mode to shift gears manually, which let me downshift ahead of a stop, using the engine to slow down the truck and trailer, instead of just relying on the brakes. It's similar to how you'd drive in the mountains or anywhere you're doing steep downhill inclines. Keep it at or below the speed limit (which, TBH, is not my norm; I'm usually slightly above), and if it's a small enough trailer, you'll be fine without surge brakes. For larger trailers, I'd definitely want surge brakes, though.

also you may not need much of a drop with uhaul.
I rented a utility trailer with ramp and only had a 2" drop receiver handy. yes it was slightly nose high but only slightly.

uhaul raises their noses a little bit on those custom trailers. (uhaul trailers are sought after, for being cheap durable, and incredibly hard to get)
