Thanks for all of the feedback. I appreciate the willingness to share information. I wonder if the GM / Chevy small trucks have a better track record. Think I'll look into that.

GM and Ford worked on the 10 speed together. I know GMs version has an issue that fords does not have, but from the people I have talked to with modernish GMs, the big problem seems to be engines vs the transmissions that fords have. I know my old neighbor had an insane oil leak on his Silverado or gmc equivalent from the pan and they couldn’t even get an oem pan for months. If your set on GM - I think somebody on here has one of the new colorados, from what he’s said it seems to be really nice.

Still a crap shoot.
My neighbor drove up in a new Colorado. A week later, he's in a Sierra. Why? The Colorado trans busted in the first week.
And I hear even Tacoma has transmission problems.

Yeah agree. First week is insane, I can’t believe he went back to another GM after that. I will say Toyota did a TSB for the 24 Tacoma and all the new transmissions have been good from what I’ve seen on the forums. I switched to a 26 4Runner (the Tacomas and 4Runners use the same transmission) and the transmission is much smoother than the my ranger at the equivalent mileage, all though missing two gears . I’d be lying if I wasn’t nervous though, I am now hyper aware and paranoid of gear changes and always do a double take whenever I notice a gear change. I know Toyotas 8 speed in their smaller vehicles/suvs has issues, but the one built for the 4 runner, Tacoma, and one of the Lexus is completely different.

Not a fan of Taco’s. Nor Toyotas in general. And I get really irritated with the Taco fanboys. All that said, the new Taco is available with a manual.

That probably just means the DRIVER will be in and out of the gearbox more often trying to keep up with traffic.

I am surprised they didn’t offer the manual available in the broncos for the new gen ranger, at least for the base trims.

They weren't all that popular in the Bronco as far as sales went. IIRC it was around 20% had ordered them with a stick and I'd bet it wouldn't be much different in Ranger sales and possibly less. I'm sure the bean counters ran the numbers and figured it's be cheaper to produce the Ranger with an automatic and just fix the 10R80.

I'd rather walk backwards, in the snow, up hill both ways than drive a Tacoma!

But I will say the Camry (hybrid) is sweet and will definitely be my next car soon.

Interesting I guess it makes sense, I don’t see a company ordering work trucks getting manuals so there goes 75% of base trim sales. A shame the consumer doesn’t have much choice anymore. I was messing with the f250 config and f350 config on fords website just to see what a base work truck would cost and what I could get for the money and wow - every option forces another option and costs way more than I thought. Another great example is Toyota saying moon roofs (rooves?) are an option but every single 4Runner in my color and trim allocated to the US had one.

Yup, Toyota did this with the Camry too. I really want the memory seats and mirrors but to get this you have to get the package with a sunroof which I don't want. There's a lot of people saying their sunroof failed (usually it gets off track or stuck) and I don't need more sun beating on me out here. lol There's a lot of complaints about this on the Camry forum and almost all said they went down in their package to avoid getting it and some just went and bought a Honda Accord instead. I emailed Toyota about this saying it should be an a-la cart option and said they were losing money by forcing this on customers. I even linked the posts and they replied they would look into it but I doubt anything will change. You often wonder who's running the show there because so much stuff makes no sense at all.

Yeah that’s my fear with sunroof - also leaks. I’ve opened mine twice since April LOL. The back window opening is pretty cool and have used it for carrying lumber but I can’t really find a similar good use for the sunroof. I have it closed with the cover over it 24/7.

A bit off topic but as someone on the oldest end of Gen Z, I believe we are going to see more interest in manual transmissions with how affordable sim racing has become. It’s a great introduction to racing sports and driving in general. It’s becoming a serious hobby for a lot of people around my age and that may translate to improved sales for manual transmissions. I just got my first direct drive wheel and pedal set up and wow, it’s seriously impressive even without the full rig.
