So I guess most any manufacturer recommends tier 1 gasoline in their vehicles because of the detergents and additives. I have googled tier 1 gas and found gas stations such as Scabmart, Wawa, Racetrack and Murphy and Cumberland Farms and so forth are not tier 1 gasoline. What confuses me is that I've seen a tanker leaving a tier 1 gas station, in this case a BP station, drive down the road and pull into a no-name Mom and Pop station to fill up their tanks. So I'm really confused unless those tankers have different compartments to separate those kinds of gasoline. I mean, they all advertise different kinds of additives so it's not like he's gonna pull into a BP gas station with Chevron gas and so forth. Does anybody know for a certainty how it all works? The Internet was not very helpful with this. Thank you and since all the gas stations are within a penny or two of one another, it doesn't cost any more to go into a tier 1 gas station. Thank you in advance to everyone who replies even if you leave goofy replies like I do sometimes. Peace and good health to all who read this and to all your families and friends!

Do added detergents really matter in a direct injection engine?
I have no idea. I would think it keep the fuel injectors cleaner.
I just googled it and apparently it does make a difference since they make fuel injector cleaners for direct injection engines.

I don't know about Ford, but I know some manufacturers do not recommend using fuel injector cleaners in the gasoline. This might very well become a hot topic. Stay tuned……

I have never heard the term Tier 1, I have always searched for Top Tier, which gas stations will have stamped on their pumps usually, at least around my hometown. We have a mom and pop gas station down the road from my house and their gasoline is Top Tier Valero gasoline but you wouldn't know that until you got to the pump. It is one of the 2 stations (the other is a Valero branded station) I use here in town that are Top Tier Ethanol Free. I know that the Love's and Murphy's in my town are not Top Tier.

That's what the claim is. Top Tier gasoline is branded that way because of the extra detergents and additives in them which reportedly keeps the carbon buildup down. It is in the manual to use Top Tier and while I would assume there is a good reason for it, I am pessimistic enough to believe it is a way to drum up business for partner companies that are Top Tier certified. Regardless, I still run a bottle of Red Line SR-1 once before every oil change. Personal preference, kind of like running Top Tier Ethanol Free 91 Octane and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Oil at 10K Intervals. Lol. To each their own, you know?

Here's more than I ever wanted to know about Top Tier™ Fuel

I also run a tank of that ethanol free 91 octane every now and then. I really wish they would stop ethanol gasoline anyway. There's a lot of hungry people in the world that could use that corn instead of our vehicles. They say it really doesn't change the price very much at all. I don't know why they overprice that ethanol free unless it's because of the 91 octane.

I use top tier fuels, mostly shell 93. Every once in a while I'll put in a tank of non top tier but not very often. "They" say the additives reduce the buildup on the valves even though the fuel never touches the valve. I assume it burns cleaner an reduces the matter that lead to the buildup. There was a post on here that stated the additives are added at the time the fuel is loaded into the tanker for delivery. The tanker is divided for multiple types of fuel so it can deliver to various types of stations.

+1 on the additives added at the loading rack, or at the delivery point for some additives
-1 on ..."even though the fuel never touches the valve..." Suzuki and AFIK every other MC manufacturer have the injectors in the throttle bodies, so both fuel and air are drawn past the intake valves. This both "washes" and cools the valves. GDI or Gasoline Direct Injection engines have the injectors in the head(s). The advantage is there is less pumping loss because only less dense air is being drawn into the cylinder (or turbocharger) and the fuel enters separately. The drawback is that because the valves aren't being washed or cooed as much, more carbon and deposits build up on the valve stems and seats. Top Tier gasolines have additives that help with this somewhat, but it will be interesting to see down the road what the effect of carbon buildup in the GDI engines will have.

I used to be a "tanker yanker", and yes, some tankers are made with interior dividers, usually four, so that multiple grades or types of fuel (or other hazmat) can be carried. Used more for aviation fuel and hazardous waste transport (what I mostly did), but common for automotive fuels, too. The additives are added in at the refinery or storage facility. Top Tier is an umbrella licensing organization that certifies the fuel meets their requirements for the additives that are in the fuel. the For some brands, TT gas/diesel is available at all their stations, but even little "Pete & Bev's Gas 'N' Fresh Eggs" type stations can request Top Tier Gasoline. Only genuine Top Tier stations can display the label & signage
5-compartment tanker with 5 different products- Left to right: hazwaste gasoline; combustable, petroleum distillates; flammable, miscellaneous liquid, petroleum distillates; combustable, sodium hydroxide. Don't rear end this truck!

Thanks so much for that, former tanker yanker. I've never noticed that top-tier logo before but now I have to start paying attention for that. I'm not so sure that is used down here in Florida. Now I'm going to start looking at every gas station I go by or pull into even though I always use the name brands like Chevron and Mobil and BP and Shell. P.S. Is that left to right on the driver side from front to back, or on the passenger side from rear to front? I suspect your answer will say front the back.

The Top Tier™ website lists all of the brands that carry TT in each state .

The photo is of the rear of the tanker and the placards are from left to right. On the sides, the placards must correspond to the product in each compartment. For a van, Connestoga, Flatbed, etc, the placards can be in any order, but all labelled hazmat/hazwaste cargo within must be accounted for with placards. Fines for missing/illegible/wrong placards can be very steep, and the responsibility falls to the driver, even if the shipper placarded the vehicle.
FMCSA at work: A pallet with two, 55 gallon drums full of bulk lighter fluid (1,001 lb or more) must be labelled and placarded as Flammable. However. a full 53 foot semi trailer loaded with lighter fluid, packaged for individual sale, doesn't.

Gotta love FMCSA and all their exemptions.........
