Sold my Tacoma for a Ranger, night and day. Tacoma was capable, the Ranger is enjoyable. Better in just about every way. The only important exception is the rear seat configuration was better in the Tacoma. I'm a daily driver, not an off-roader.
Totally agree - especially when you say 'night and day' because the Ranger is better (imo) is so very many ways.

Hey all...Tacoma owner here, seriously considering trading out to a Ranger. My main issue is how unpleasant it is to drive out highway speeds. The constant gear searching and redlining is exhausting. Being the Ranger has a good amount more torque, it has me intrigued. Looking for Ranger owners thoughts on how these trucks do cruising at 70+.

Thanks in advance.
The Ranger will solve your issue. It is effortless, between the boost and 10-speed it performs great. It does a great job at picking the gears and keeps the RPM low even during medium-hard acceleration. Every day this truck surprises me with how much power it has and how comfortable the seats are and how quiet the ride is

None of the gear searching I've heard a lot of GEN3 Tacoma owners complain about, plus a way better engine in the Ranger. Aside from those two things I think the trucks are pretty comparable for the most part. I traded a 2014 Tacoma in for my Ranger and I have zero regrets after 2k miles.

Came from 1995, 2008, 2012, 2016 Tacomas. Tired of paying top dollar for a mediocre and gutless tech-free Tacoma.

I was able to hit 90-100 mph up the Grapevine Pass in SoCal which has a 6% grade. Truck had plenty of power left in Sport mode vs D mode, the difference in extreme scenarios like that is very noticeable.

My thing with the 2014 Tacoma Off-Road I had was this...it was totally reliable after 80k miles, it was very capable off-road, but it got terrible gas mileage, the engine was pretty light on power, and it was lacking a lot of features I was looking for in a daily driver. Also, it was a very uncomfortable compared to the Ranger...the seats, ride, cabin noise, etc. Bother are great trucks in my opinion but the Ranger is way a head of the Tacoma when it comes technology in general and I have no doubts that the Ranger will be equally capable off-road.

I think the GEN3 Tacoma was a step down from the GEN2 in a lot of ways...they tried to modernize the truck but the technologies they used were kind of unrefined...the engine/transmission and associated complaints being the most apparent example of this.

Former Tacoma owner here. Traded a 2017 TRD OR Access Cab Tacoma for my new Ranger Lariat! All I can say is, "Why didn't they have this when I bought the Taco"?!! Great ride, Great Truck, and when I put it in Sport Mode.... WOW!!!
Exactly what I have but a double cab

Have you test driven a 2019 Ranger? Try it out on the highway first in D then in Sport. Same from a red-light in D mode then Sport.

I still have a 17 Taco and a 19 Ranger and the driveability on the Ranger is night and day difference. The taco constantly revs and downshifts and the Ranger just stays in tenth gear and plugs along. Both trucks are nice but the taco seat lack of head room and lack of low end torque make the trans go crazy! You wont be disappointed.

Do be aware that shifting will likely be weird if you test drive a really low mileage ranger. Takes a couple hundred miles for the transmission to adjust.

Did my second test drive of a Ranger vs Tacoma today. The Ranger is the more comfortable vehicle and the power train is a lot better.

The Double Cab TRD Off Road with Premium and Tech package is a lot cheaper than the Lariat I drove though.

I hit the 90's the other day and noticed it got kinda "floaty" feeling. How about you? I know it isn't a sports car (or even a car) but it seems once you hit a certain speed (well above legal limits), it does seem a bit uneasy.

They get you with the add-ons. I got a 4x4 Lariat with the tow package and 501A package for $38k. If you want to save money avoid paying for appearance (sport package, wheel packages, chrome package, black package, upgraded paint) and only buy the Fx4 if you are really seriously going to off road. I personally think the Lariat package under $40k is a decent value but it depends on what you want from your truck. I wanted a fast, comfortable, capable daily driver that could tow and haul and deal with light offroading.
