When I lived in Germany you could not modify a car in any way without taking it back thru the TUV, their inspection process, and every serial number in the license book had better match. No tuners, no tranny swaps, no engine swaps, no major changes at all. And their inspection makes our safety checks look like kids play, they check EVERYTHING!
But they have Ruf 911...

Yes they do, and fine sports car company, with some fast cars. I did't say you could not purchase a fast car, you just can't mod one that has already passed TUV. Heck, I had a De Thomas that was like strapping your ass to a rocket ship, but it came from the factory that way. I did love that AutoBahn.

The EPA has been doing this stuff since the 70's (thanks to Richard Nixon). I remember my first taste of EPA regulation when I had to get a NOx device for my '70 Chevelle in 1977. When I swapped the stock CVCC head in my '77 Honda Civic for a 1975 non-CVCC head so i could run a hot cam and dual downdraft Webers, I "got away" with that for a few years then got dinged because the smog guy had a book that told him what was stock for that year engine. It apparently didn't matter that the car would otherwise pass smog. I believe the fledgling EPA in the 70's was on track to do some good things, but the do-gooders went too far and have lost sight of the reason behind the rules. There doesn't appear to be any gray areas anymore. If you modify an engine to perform better than EPA standards, because it's not stock, it will fail even before the stick the probe up it's tailpipe. Just one reason I rode & raced motos: I could do anything I wanted to a bike and never had to get the OK from the DMV.

Corporate drone. Dilbert's world is alive & well.
As happens with quite a few threads here...... just read the entire thing. And going to keep my mouth shut (No way! Shocker! Say it ain't so!) about 99% of the comments. Everybody has opinions.

But I will say this... if/when the authorities start impounding fucktard driving coal rolling diesel pickups on the spot, hauling them to the crusher, fining the owners for being stupid, and selling beer on site for those of us that want to watch the crusher in action..... COUNT ME IN!!!! (I'll even volunteer to drive a tow truck occasionally if they are short of drivers.) And after the dust settles, force the coal rolling owners, who now get to continue their payments with no vehicle to drive  ?, to study, and truly learn about, the hazards of diesel exhaust.

And as to the shops that sell/install the engine modification equipment to/for those fucktard diesel owners? Don't even get me started as to what penalties I'd like to see for those pieces of ?.

Deep breath. Stop going down that rabbit hole. Chill. Going to my happy place now. Thinking mellow thoughts........

Opinions are like assholes, they all stink. Well all except mine. Mine smells like rose petals.

I think you can thank the “rolling coal” guys for for putting a BIG spotlight on this. People are fed up with it. Including me. Just plain stupidity.

FYI - it’s the burps, not the farts. I’ll raise them in my garage if it comes to that.

Love me a good steak dinner.

Come to think of it, being that cars are deadly weapons...and EVs are "hollywood quiet"...I think they need be as loud as possible. For safety you know? Think of the children. How many more must die for your silly EVs?!

I'll write a letter to a California senator and next thing you know all EV owners will have to put up with stupid noises coming from their cars.

That's been a thing for years. All hybrids and EV's have noise generators for that very reason.

I worked with a guy who got a Telsa, the thing doesn't make a sound.
It must not be a current version. I believe it was put into law in 2020, or 2021. Our '23 Model Y makes noise below 15 MPH.

While you're writing letters, send one to that attorney general who hasn't charged that d bag actor with murder yet.
