I had a large coffee cup I'm my front cup holder the other day so I had to move my shifter in a different way and I noticed this issue. Normally I put my palm on the top of the shifter and just push it forward back to drive. I do not push the button I know it's not necessary.

So on to the issue, remember big coffee mug. So after having to prove my 4 banger is greater than your busted 5.3 Chevy with no exhaust my giant mug got in the way. So I put my fingers behind the shifter, palm above and facing forward and pushed. It went all the way to neutral. I removed said mug and reproduced this many time. Any ideas before I let the dealer even look at it again?

You shouldn't be able to go from S to neutral, it should stop at D. When your in D there's a detent to stop this from going into neutral but no detent from S to D mode.

We were just having this discussion not to long ago on how S should have a detent to stop it from going to D. I use S a lot when off road and rest my hand on the shifter and I'm constantly bumping it back into D when going over bumps. It's never gone past D and into N so I would have it looked at as this shouldn't be happening.

There is a detent to stop the shifer in Drive. The problem is the spring on the detent isn’t strong enough and if you push the shifter fast enough you can get the detent to float over Drive and go all the way to Neutral. Reverse isn’t possible without the button, but even if you did get the shifter to reverse the computer wouldn’t allow it to happen.

Thanks that's what I was thinking, time to go to the dealership.

Is it worth it? They will probably tell you to leave it for a couple of weeks so they can 'look' at it, then tell you they have to keep it longer waiting on parts.

Probably not. I do not like taking my vehicles to the dealership for anything. I can replicate the issue in my driveway. Just depends on what part of the shifter I push on. Honestly it will probably never see the dealer again. Warranty will be up by next summer anyway. It's only 9 months old and touching 20k.

Drink less coffee and it will probably be fine.

Back when I used S a lot, i had the same thing happen a number of times.

Exactly Jason. My truck does the same thing occasionally, but I had no interest in addressing it with the dealership.

I checked this when I drove mine to lunch just now.

If I shift normally, it hits a detent and stops at D.

If I shift quickly, it glides right over the detent and hits N.

I think what you're experiencing is par for the course.

Will Ford do anything to address it?

Who knows, but I suspect he dealer line is going to be "They all do that".

Maybe Phil will chime in from a manufacturer's perspective.

I didn't want to ping him in this thread as I think he's pretty busy, but maybe he'll catch it on a drive by.
