Good day folks

Found a new noise on my '21 with just under 60k .
Start to slow down and where the transmission starts to downshift and say goes from 8th gear to 4th or 3rd I hear a loud snap sound . There is no unusual suspension noises when driving . It just seems as when you are coming to a stop and will all of a sudden hear a snap

Just a WAG…

Broken leaf spring? Some have broken at the eyelet.
Only seems to happen in gear , if I shift to neutral it doesnt do it . It's not the slip yoke thump

I was thinking it might be a broken leaf making noise with the shift in weight forward as you brake. Some owners have had leafs break at the eyelet. 🤷‍♂️

I hope you get it figured out.

Sounds like a possible (U-Joint) play and or the carrier bearing - most likely
Lube on the spline shaft depleted - possible
Wear on the differential Ring & Pinion Gear - possible
Worn Trans or Engine Mount - possible

It all ties into the driveshaft backlash when downshifting

I was under it today checked ball joints sway bar links all tight , Trans mount seems tight u joints seemed tight , got to the Carrier bearing and seems I can move it around as it seems soft , question is now how much should you be able to move it around

I would lube the driveshaft spline. When in neutral, you remove a lot of torque loading on the spline and it might not cause a thump that happens when the transmission is in gear, so putting it in neutral may not be a good test for the spline needing lube.

It skips 7-6-5th gears?! Brings back my PTSD...

Unless im on the highway , I lock out 9-10 till above 60 mph , but tbh I have not paid attention to how it downshifts from 8th , all I know is when it does with brakes applied it hits 4th or 3rd and hear a snap . Tbh it almost sounds like one of the old ford vehicles they had a recall in the 90's i want to say where the firewall would crack around the brake booster and would give you that metal snapping noise . I will pay attention to it next time as to how it down shifts and let you know.
