While pulling into a parking space at slow speed, the engine suddenly accelerates, and I have to jam my break peddle. I can hear the engine speed suddenly rev up and then dies down after hard breaking. Kind of scary and it has happened twice in the past year. Has this happened to anyone else and any idea why it happens ?? I did not accidentally hit the accelerator pedal.

You are probably pressing the brake pedal and accelerator pedal at the same time without realizing it. It is easy to do on the Ranger, if your right foot is not fully on the brake pedal and partially overhangs.

Like Bob says above. The brake pedal sits up higher than the gas pedal and if you’re wearing work boots or just have big feet, everything seems fine until the brake pedal gets as low as the gas pedal - then it starts that scary scenario. I did this at a crosswalk - frightening for everyone.

Just be deliberate when braking and after a while, it will become second nature for you to get it right every time. You could also bleed your brakes and that might help bring the truck to a full stop without your foot ever accidentally pressing the go pedal at the same time.

My truck will do this in tow or sport. If I'm off the gas and going slow, like in a parking lot or in traffic, the shift from 1-2 or 2-3 causes a kind of abrupt acceleration.

Thanks MechanicalBob, I was in tow mode. Just don’t think I hit brake and gas at same time, I have small foot. Truck just surged forward, unlike throttling the gas pedal.

I’m 90+% in ”S” mode and have never experienced anything quite like what’s been described. ?‍♂

I notice it most in bumper to bumper traffic in tow or sport. If I leave it in drive it lugs in 3rd gear, so I put it in S or tow, but if traffic speeds up a little and it upshifts, it can be a surprising lurch forward.

Mine will do it occasionally in any mode. I give a little gas it goes i let off the gas it kind of bucks, like i let off the gas right at a shift point then the computer compensates right in the middle of performing another action it had wanted to do. So it gets confused and ends up bucking. I think this is more than likely what happens. Happened today at one of the big box stores. In regular drive.

Are you braking at the same time this happens? The OP said that he was braking when it happened. If so, I still think that his foot pressed the gas pedal at the same time as the brake pedal. I've done it myself.

Good catch. No, this happens to me when not braking. Picture being stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic. You let off the brake, but use no throttle either because you're able to just idle and keep up. Then it shifts to 2nd and lurches forward. It doesn't do that all the time, but enough that I'm prepared for it now.

Appreciate all the response. Is was scary enough to see if happening to anyone else. Not wide spread, so I’ll keep an eye on it. Likely what is happening with Cabose-1.

That rings a bell...I do recall having this strange effect but not so much bucking but an abrupt shift right as I let off feels like a jolt...another "whatdaFknow?" moment...
