They found my issue to be white lithium grease inside the housing containing the heating element of the drivers side AC. Between this issue and my satellite radio unit going out (a known issue with other Ford models) my car was in the shop for one month of the first 4. Ford bought it back under the lemon law/buy back program.
Well, I called the dealer that I bought the truck from, and explained that I expected there was grease in the heating element, and they seemed much more willing to investigate than the one by my house. That's promising at least.

Hopefully they correct these bugs in the Ranger. I just bought a Colorado but I’m hoping that Ford comes around with a Ranger in 2-3 years with 6ft bed and more driver side leg room. The Colorado is nice but not as comfortable and stylish as a Ranger, nor as well equipped with options. However I don’t have to worry about harmful fumes coming into the cab. I should have listened to that little voice inside my head about buying a first year model.

Good luck with yours—maybe you will get luckier than me and they find the issue and correct it

My truck does the exact same thing, I will make an appointment for that issue to be checked by my dealer. The smell is horrible, and gives my wife and I a headache.

There hasn’t been any recent updates, and I thought I would share my expiernce with this A/C smell. In April of 2020 I bought a 2019 ford ranger that was remaining on the dealers lot. I bought this truck brand new. I have started to have the same burning crayon/ass smell. Exactly has JoelD has stated it happens right between 72-75 while you have the A/C on. Currently ford is aware of the issue, and have come up with a reengineered design to fix this.... guess what, the date that’ll this new design has yet to be announced, especially since Ford motors plants have been shut down due to COVID. I have taken the truck to two different ford dealerships and there is absolutely nothing they can do, because the part they are being instructed to order hasn’t even been made yet. While at the second dealership I contacted ford to ask for guidance on what we can do with this smell. The smell causes my head to hurt after long periods of being in the vehicle. Now with Virginia weather it’s time to only have the A/C on. I did file a lemon law claim today and have to wait 5 days before I hear anything. In Virginia you have to take your vehicle to 3 dealerships... but seems stupid when ford says they don’t have the product. I’ll be anxious to see what happens.... any advice or share of expierence would be greatly appreciated. I have only had the truck 2 months and have 1800 miles. Dealer wouldn’t even buy out what I owe on the vehicle to trade for another. I have a Lariat and to trade I was upside down 6K and never even made my first payment.....

From what I remember under Va and NC lemon law you are eligible to file if you have been deprived of your vehicle for a set number of days—like 20 or so total. I don’t remember anything about three dealerships. Some people may not live within 2 hours of three different dealerships. I went to two. Out of first 3 months they collectively had it for well in excess of 20. You should expect down payment, TTL, reimbursement for any add one at dealership like cargo cover, bed liner etc. I even got money back for after market tonneau cover I ordered online. Plus you get back everything monthly payment made after problem was first brought to dealer attention. They just take off a slight bit for the mileage you did use. It was generous settlement. The FORD customer service people where I initiated the buy back and processed were generally excellent to deal with. It takes 2-3 months.

I have had this issue with my truck as well. To minimize the smell try leaving the A/C on low. if i run it on low it doesn't smell. if its on auto the smell will appear for about 20-30 minutes. i'm in FL so it pretty much just stays on low for max cooling. every once in a awhile i'll run the heat full blast with the windows down just to run it. I see there is no fix yet so i wont even bother bringing it in for repair.

I Will have to say, I am glad I found this thread, because it helped me at the first dealership I took it too, because they hadn’t even seen any complaints about this issue. Other than the smell, I absolutely love the truck! It ride and drives like a dream! I know right now the Rangers are flying off the lots.

I am going to try what you do and see if this helps. It’s such a shame to pay such good money for a truck and it just stink, like literally stinks! Lol

But I will have to say that rides like a dream and has an abundance of power. My only other wish is for the drivers seat and/or pedals adjust further to give you more leg room. And then to make crew cab in 6ft bed.

So just to follow up, as a test I've run the system on auto ranging from 65 - 70 for a few weeks since my last posting to see if helped anything and the A/C A$$ smell has seem to have gone away. Its also been hot as hell and raining quite a bit in FL so i'm not sure of that has had anything to do with it. nearing 11K miles and 8 months of usage

Good to hear. But my guess is that ithe AC is running all the time to keep the cab cool and the heating element has not had to come on to keep it from getting too cool. I Just hope you Are lucky enough to have a cured truck.

So about a month ago I purchased a left over 2019 Ranger. My car has the same body odor smell coming from the vents when my air is on above 65-70. Brought the car to ford to have them tell me they don’t smell it. Finally I duplicated it for them. They told me they could not find anything wrong and “deodorized” the vents. When I went to turn my car on same smell came out. They can’t find anything wrong and will not admit a problem. Anyone have any success with a fix yet? My car is 3 weeks old! What can I do?

Following this thread. I have the same issue but haven't taken to the dealer yet. It seems like the lithium grease issue a previous poster mentioned as the plausible cause. (I should add my truck is at 17,500 miles and smell is still there) It is only driver side, and happens with the heating element or heat on only.
