But the ACTUAL mission may be something other than providing people like you and I with pre-programmed chauffeurs... (HINT: DARPA sponsored the first-ever self-driving autonomous vehicle competition. Back in 2011 or so, if I recall correctly. What is DARPA's mission, Bueller? Anybody?)

Artificial Intelligence just flew an F-16 for the United States military (wearethemighty.com)

Before they turned A.I. loose on its own in the real F-16 they let a skilled pilot dogfight the A.I. in the simulator. The A.I. won 4 out of 5 easily before the pilot got a kill on the final 5th fight. Both F-16s were setup identical. Imagine what would happen if the software controlled G limit was removed from the A.I. version. The F-16 is limited to around 9G due to having a human pilot. The airframe can handle 12 I think. The F-22 airframe supposedly can handle 22g but they can't test it to confirm with a human pilot.

<sarcasm ON>... because cobalt mining is much more kid-friendly than that "fake news" image portrays. </sarcasm OFF>

"But he's not mining cobalt!" is probably true, but irrelevant to the point of the reality of nearly ALL rare-earth mining in Africa.

And it doesn't get much better in China, Afghanistan, India, or any of the other third-world countries where a large proportion of rare-earth materials come from. Much of our modern hi-tech wonders (and the super low prices of nearly all manufactured goods) are available at affordable prices because of slave labor and child labor in these parts of the world. How much would an EV cost if miners and other laborers were paid to the standards of USA or western European nations? Even if the wages were lowered a proportionate amount due to regionally lower costs of living.
I don't disagree with you. HOWEVER, if those countries didn't have corrupt governments stealing all the money from their efforts, they'd be a lot better off. It's not just an economic issue, but also a geopolitical one that is not so easy to solve.

Hi Sid,

My new hearing aids that I bought because the 2 year old ones never worked have AI and it is amazing... These hearing aids are speech focused and figure out how to block background noise making listing much clearer. Not perfect but so much better, so I trashed the $2500 hearing aids as mere backups, Just incase...

Best,
Phil

They're corrupt because we corrupted them...better known as "regime change"...

RETIRED ENGINEER
Just had a visit yesterday from one of my friends and current Ford Engineer working on driverless Ford Vehicle systems. Interest discussion on where we are on fully atonomous vehicles....A long way off... Here are the six levels.... Ford is currently at #2. Mecerdes trying for #3, but not there yet.
Tesla is at #2...Not 3 or 4 as they claim according to my friend.

Phil, not such a long way off for level 5.

Waymo opened to members of the public fully autonomous rides from downtown Phoenix to the airport. The company has been running a paid robotaxi service in Chandler, just outside of Phoenix, since 2020.

Watched TFL take a test ride last month in a FULLY autonomous iPace Jag WAYMO in Phoenix on Youtube:

TFL Waymo ride

Was in Los Angeles visiting the Peterson Auto Museum Feb 12th and saw a driver less WAYMO pass me driving in traffic.

The Alphabet-owned self-driving technology company first announced plans to launch a 24/7 robotaxi service in LA back in October. A month later, the California Department of Motor Vehicles granted Waymo a modification to its existing driverless testing permit so it could expand beyond San Francisco and into Los Angeles.

Looks like the future is here.

It's actually been a few days since we had a really good one so here's my contribution, lol

Ford seems to be digging a deeper hole for itself on all fronts lately :(

Ford’s F-150 Trouble Worsens (msn.com)
I saw that one last week too. I didn't want to post it seeing as I always post doom and gloom for EV's. Glad you're the one their now after with pitch forks. lol

Unfortunately that's not what that kids doing. Getty images is fun and all, but there's a significant amount of misinformation on the internet.
Let's make the argument about images on the internet being labeled wrong instead of the human and environmental cost of mining cobalt.
If that makes you happy...

I think Tesla, for all the good it has done in the EV sector for innnovation, has spurred a lot of the negative perceptions about autonomous driving. Marketing what is essentially a high tech cruise control as "full self driving" gives people the complete wrong perception over what the technology is capable of today. If they had been more honest in the marketing of it, perceptions might be different.

"Full Self Driving" is indeed impressive, but it is certainly a long ways from being fully autonomous. Someone once told me "you can be correct 99.9% of the time, but that .1% where you screw up is what is going to make the news". When autonomous vehicles fail, they typically fail in pretty spectacular fashion (see the Tesla's that rammed into objects at full speed without ever having applied brakes or attempting to avoid said object).

We seem to be continually "5 years from fully autonomous vehicles" - kind of like we are 5 years from cold fusion or 5 years from the perfect battery.....
Well if anyone is a Trekker - the enterprise was on a 5 year mission and it just kept getting extended - they still didn’t really have autonomous driving?

But on a serious note - not a big fan of the idea of autonomous driving but if it can be used to help me drive through bad weather where it is hard to see the road (like heavy rain or snow falling) I am all for it - that would be a useful AI. I just don’t need it to do my driving for me.

100%. That is precisely where modern Driving AIs fail, too. They are not really competitive with intelligent humans (yet).

If "autonomous vehicles" is the answer, I think it bears asking, "What is the question?"

Most of the questions I see right now:
How can I have transportation without needing to actually DRIVE?
How can I do a taxi fleet without hiring PEOPLE?
Can I get my deliveries done without hiring DRIVERS?

The real money-maker in this is government contracts, meaning military and specialized law enforcement vehicles, where the question is:
How can I get my materials moved without risking DEATH? (and the vehicles involved are not CARS...)

Pondering this for a few moments makes you begin to see where the push for autonomous vehicles is coming from. (DARPA sponsored autonomous vehicle competitions for 2011 and 2012. Maybe more, but "What is DARPA's mission again?"...
