Why do manufacturers not ALLOW this?

There is enough distracted driving out there, that being said, I modified my RV system to show the rear view while driving. This is a great aid to both keeping an eye on my Ranger being towed, and allowes me to easily see when it is safe to move right after passing a semi. Also, that rule is from the NTSB, not the manufacturer.

It may come as a surprise, but it is possible to use the info screen to view the rear cam. Unfortunately, it requires more than a simple switch. It also voids the warranty, if that is a real issue.

Just put it in R and the camera will come on. It works and Tom @SubVet has done it. I'll admit I never had the stones to try it. o_O

My RV is the same, either side view with blinker and rear when in reverse. I added a switch to trigger the rear view while driving, just need to turn it off to make changes to the infotainment system.

My wife's Jaguar F-Pace SUV allows you to click on the rearview camera whenever you like. It's great for pulling into the garage. We know exactly when the rear bumper clears the door. More manufacturers should allow it.

I think it is mostly because that's the infotainment screen. Plenty of aftermarket backup cameras with an "always on" option. Very popular for larger vehicles like RV's or people who tow often. I have a fiberglass topper which I load up when I go camping, which blocks my rear view mirror. I've considered wiring up a backup camera on my roof rack by the topper's 3rd brake light to have for that sorta situation.

I do not think there's any regulation against it, I know mid engine sportscars (like the C8 vette) are starting to come with a dual-mode rear view mirror which can function normally, or fully as a screen using a camera on the back of the car.

My former Colorado ZR2 allowed you to access the rear camera at any time. I wish i could have combined features from the ZR2 and the Tremor to "build my own".

I can think of no reason at all I would want or need this.

I find it highly annoying when I have to drive another person's truck at work and they have their camera set to "always on."

Great feature to have if you are towing a trailer with a load that isn't visible above the tailgate. Other than towing, i only used it to see how close people got to my bumper at red lights.

When I've been in that situation in the past I've just dropped the tailgate.?‍♂

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for bitching about missing features. But this wouldn't even hit my radar. The truck is missing a lot more important things. Cooled memory seats, heated steering wheel, powered rear slider, etc.

I've dropped tailgate before too in the past, but on my current trailers, the tongue jack is too close to the hitch/tailgate to get away with that. Not losing any sleep over it, bit would be a nice option bundled in with the other options you mentioned. ?
