Outback has a crummy seating position for us older members we found after a test drive. We got the Forester for that reason plus the visibility and lower insurance rates. It's better in the snow then my Ranger but won't tow much.

i like the look of the crosstrek but would not trade my ranger for one. I feel like the main thing is does one need more utility or more comfort on road. you can deck out a subie and do most of what one would want off road. but you would be pushing its limits on weight etc. trying to do anything truck related. esp after putting bigger tires and all that jazz on a subie. ive always thought of them as a great option for someone who lives up north and has a couple kids to get to school in bad weather. not much more.

The Crossstrek is a good option. The hybrid model losses floor space since they put the batteries under the rear trunk area. It is sportier than the Outback or Forester models.

I traded my 2014 Forester for my Ranger, the only saving grace on the Forester was the 6-speed manual (sadly no longer available ) and 50/50 viscous coupling center diff on mine that made it pretty much unstoppable under almost any conditions-with the right tires. My Ranger has better engine, room, seating, payload, towing and a real transfer case

We are on our fifth Subie, three Outbacks and 2 Legacy's. Current Outback is a 22 Touing XT. Fit and finish are way better than the Ranger and is very stable in any weather it's been in. Offroad goes to the Ranger for sure. Happy to have both.

Not ours. Our 1982 had it's boots replaced but that was it's only issue. Our 12 Forester and 14 Outback have needed nothing done. Just had the oil changed today and brakes are 8mm after 55k miles. Alignment and battery( 2nd one) good. No oil in gas either or vice versa.

Suspension travel is maybe a non-obvious difference that is night and day. You're going to be 2- or 3-wheeling it quite a bit off-road in a Subie. (Never popped a windshield though ?)

A Subaru with decent/correct tires can do quite a bit. Wouldn't count it out.

I have to ask. Jack, are you thinking about trading the ranger for a subie?

I'm quite curious to see this Subi-Windshield crack happen.

Any videos?

Subarus are pretty cool and probably do what most people need capability wise if you don’t do truck stuff. For me a Subaru wouldn’t be practical considering I tow a lot. There is no way im putting dead deer and hogs in the back of it lol. There’s not enough little tree air fresheners on earth to mask that aroma!
