I spoke with the service manager when I picked up my tailgate dampener the other day, she told me that programming must be done via the type "C" method, the other types will not work. Another employee in sales there wanted to do the exact same as me, mount the pad to the inside of the fuel filler door on a Ranger he had bought for his son. She said that she personally attempted the procedures in types A&B and the that the vehicle would not recognize the pad, using the IDS program is the only way for it to be programmed.
As it turns out, I had worked with her sister some years ago when I worked at a dealership, so I don't think that she would lie to me. She even offered me the company's employee rate for programming the device, which coupled with the price of that pad, does not warrant my very occasional use for the device.
The parts department did cut me a conventional steel key just for unlocking the door for a paltry $15, I'll store this key in a HitchSafe vault (as other members had suggested) of which I ordered online last night.
Thus ends my saga of the wireless keyless entry pad...time to move on.
Thank you for the follow up. Too bad it requires the IDS software to program - at least you know now.

So you are going to leave your fob in the truck and put the cut key in the hitch safe? I just put the fob in there. As long as I don't keep the keyring on it, it fits fine.

That is exactly what I plan on doing, the fob, along with my other keys probably wont fit in the HitchSafe.
I forgot to mention that the salesperson was adamant about the keyless entry pad, despite the almost $200 total price for it.
I could of used my FordPass rewards, but for the total $61 cost, the HitchSafe will work just fine.

Yea, I disconnect the keyring from the fob and leave that in the truck but put the fob in the hitchsafe. Either way works..... I really like the hitchsafe - it has worked out really well for me.

That's not a very good batting average...
Is yours factory installed above the left door handle or did you buy it over the counter and mount it elsewhere? I am assuming that the entire pad is serviced as a unit, meaning if it is mounted to the door the potential for paint damage is great.
Based on your experiences with it, I'm glad I scrapped the whole keypad idea.

Yeah Jeff its factory installed. It is a great feature but it needs to last longer. Bret

Mine was factory and completely dead when I got the truck. I never thought to check it at delivery, but found out it was dead the next day. I removed it at my first wash.

Thanks to this forum I found how to replace the battery. The replacement lasted 8 days.

It was $95 on the sticker, so figured it was worth pursuing. I tried to get them to just send me 1, but they insisted I bring it in. The look on the service writer's face when I handed it to him was priceless. After some back and forth they determined a new pad was in order, but of course they didn't have 1 and wanted me to come back. I went and found my salesman to see if he could help and after he talked to service he cut me a $95 check.

At this point I guess I'm satisfied.

How long did the battery last when you changed it out?

Hi Folks,

I am getting the picture that this keypad is not robust and as such needs a redesign or a quality control improvement. I was thinking I might what this for my Ranger, but not until it is new and improved....if ever...

I've got the factory mounted keypad option and it looks so cheap being stuck on the door. Ford should have been integrated into the door frame like on some of the other fords I've seen now that looks trick and not to mention all this nonsense with batteries failing would be a mute point

I've had my truck 11 months now and haven't used the keypad in the last 6 months ..........at least. I just checked it after seeing this thread and guess what? It's completely dead.....no light.....no functionality.

I'll try and get this one warrantied. If it dies again I won't waste my time or money until another, more robust, style is offered.

Mine lasted 7 or 8 days also after dealer put battery in it. Dealer is not supposed to replace battery, just replace the unit and reprogram it. The few days mine would work it would unlock doors at night by itself ! The 3rd one I have now works well. Bret
