I'm leaning towards giving up some bed space going from full (54" wide) to single (30" wide) bed (20" bed to ceiling) in order to contain the entire "LUNAR MODULE" within the 5' bed and be able to keep the tailgate on...it's cozy to say the least but would fit a 6' guy with enough room to fully stretch out within the 76" wide box...the lounging area is 26" wide x 76" deep x 44" tall...should fit my Strongback low folding chair at a comfortable distance from a ceiling mounted 40" diagonal...there's enough room below the bed area for plenty of storage and a 5,000 btu AC...there's room to sleep two very comfortably if necessary...

A guy in Denver started a company that basically makes this topper, dubbed "MoonLander", if that's helpful info: https://www.radicaproducts.com/gallery

There's one on a red SuperCrew Ranger near the bottom the gallery page.

I would build a few feel of over hang on the cab, even if its only 6" tall, could design slide out trays in there;

1.) Place to house electronic guts or goodies (storage)

2.) Counter-weight

3.) Give the appearance of more balanced

Products with rear bed overhang just twitched my OCD because it gives the appearance of being rear heavy. Just a personal thing.

I am going to be going a slightly different route, I still plan to try my hand at building my own square drop camper, but with standing room. So I guess like a square drop trailer XXL, but still smaller than compact travel trailers.

Thanks for the inputs, Jack...I've considered that and many alternative scenarios but there's no opportunity to make usable space and still fit under 6' 10" to clear my 7' door opening...this one I showed long time ago on page 15 is still one of my favorites but would take a long time to execute...it has the cab overhang...not for storage but for pop up wedge tent...and lengths increase to extend beyond the tailgate...still, even this one can't fit under a 7' door...

The tan square behind the truck is exactly 7' tall and by the time the space above is cut off, I end up with a flimsy pancake above the cab...the dark square behind represents 72" standing height that is required to create full standing height with head touching the roof...so you see my delima...yes, I could do a pop top (too complex) or full monster box like a Kimbo...but no thanks...

MOONBOOTS advantages:
  • super lightweight-low CG
  • fast/inexpensive to build
  • fits in garage and under drive-thru's
  • fits me and dog very comfortably
  • heated with AC
  • shore power and internal power bank
  • I foresee being able to mount/dismount by myself if built light enough
The "MOONBOOTS" pod is a "get it done and go camp now" minimalist option...there may be more than pods down the road...wife's not interested in anything short of an Airstream so this is my one man bug out pod that I can build quickly and quietly without shattering the bank...down the road, I'll work on the trailer conversion so she can come along...

So it sounds like you need to rebuild the opening to your garage, then revisit this idea.

I just can't imagine its to expensive to open the garage up taller by another foot or two vs. widening it.
No problem...one garage will have 7' and the one next to it 12'...it'll look just fine... ?

All I'm hearing are excuses to build a nice barn for yourself that's detached from the house ?

I'm not regretting getting married and having kids or anything...but...in my alternate universe, I'd have a garage with an attached house ?...

I mean, I'm not opposed. I'm not back at the buying part of life again and was pretty bummed to miss out on a place that was a steal and had a *great* 20x20 barn in the backyard that would've been great for things. I don't mind them being separate, but I would love to have a nice garage space that actually fits 2 vehicles and the bikes...

I can't really complain...my current home and (probably final) was designed with 3 bays...should've anticipated the door height and made it 10' instead of standard 7'...but all good...

Still, all I'm hearing is a reason to do more work and raise the roof and put in a loft at the same time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A Boss from Long ago was single all his life and did just that.

His living room is large enough for his semi- truck. The google maps and zillow is the house inquestion.

2 beds 2 baths, small kitchen, great views, in a decent small town. big enough for multiple vehicles. If you look at the zillow pictures there is a large Bucket truck inside the garage, I think his el camino next to it.

I was gonna joke about just getting taller doors too. I bought my place for the garage mostly, the house is just OK. After being here over a year if I were to do it again I'd look for 12' ceilings an 9' doors. It's a B to just reach the openers to set the opener pass codes.
