Looking at them feeding the line out, you are right that it is synthetic line.Look at it again, it's not cable, it's spectra or whatever synthetic line. It doesn't do the " snapback and cut you in half " trick that cable does.
I still don't think they were being cautious enough around the winch line.
Standing directly in line with the pull makes me think of a bumper or tow hook coming off, winch mount breaking, all kinds of things that could instantly become a lethal projectile.
I know the synthetic is much better at dealing with the stored kinetic energy, but Murphy's Law follows me like an obedient dog and if something did release it would aim straight for me.
