I’m thinking about putting in some plug and play LED headlights to upgrade from the stock halogen bulbs. I noticed that a lot of the light packages come as a pack of 4? Would I need 6? (High beam low beam and fog). I can’t seem to find a straight answer and would appreciate some guidance!

Straight Answers:

Good luck - too many of them are much too long for the headlight housing and you can’t put things back together. Sure, they fit the socket but that doesn’t mean they fit the housing. When the manufacturer tells you, “They should fit”, they have no clue.

If you find ones the right length, most of them do not work nicely with the reflectors in the halogen headlight assembly and you’ll be blinding everyone on the road until you aim your headlights much lower, eliminating the effect of the “upgrade”. Money wasted.

You’re seeing kits of four because not all trim levels include fog lights.

Also, DO NOT buy LED tail light bulbs - yours are already LED and they are non-serviceable units. Others found out the hard way.

They will always look like this.

There are numerous threads about this and in them are the noted ones that work and fit behind the dust cover.
But they will never be a perfect output, they will work.

Do your research before buying any conversion bulbs...make sure they're 1:1 bulb design that is compact and fit within the housing's rear cap...with proper aiming, my high and low conversion has worked out for all of my 145K miles and still working great...

The brand I use are not available anymore but maybe you can find something like them...

I have some basic questions to ask. First and foremost are you planning to keep the factory housings? If so keep the halogen bulbs. If you put an LED in there it will do nothing but cause glare and piss other drivers off.

Now if your intentions are to replace the entire headlight housings with morimoto's or even alpha Rex headlights, then go right ahead. Those at least have a projector housing and will put the light where it needs to be.

I was planning on keeping the factory housing. I have read that it can be difficult to fit them in the factory housing but I figured there had to be at least one type that worked. I know so many people that have replaced their headlights to LED’s on their respective vehicle types. I guess it’s just a fault on the rangers ..

Technically speaking there is no single LED drop-in bulb that is legal in any US state. If the vehicle came with halogen headlights, that housing is only designed for halogen headlights and will do nothing but cosplayer regardless of vehicle manufacturer and model.

You want LED lights, spend the money on some LED headlight assemblies. Yes it is expensive, but it'll be the right way to do it

If you wish to upgrade your headlights (including high beams and low beams) and fog lights, you will need to purchase three pairs of bulbs for each application. Before purchasing, verify the bulb size required for each application (consult your vehicle owner's manual or contact the LED lighting brand's customer service).
If you only wish to upgrade a specific component, such as the low beams, you need only purchase one pair of LED bulbs fit for low beams. Similarly, you must ensure the bulb model is correct.

Here’s the chart from the Owner’s Manual (pages 324-5 in the PDF version) - it does not designate bulbs by trim level.

Standard Equipment:
Lariat - LED headlights (Hi & Lo), LED fog lights, and LED taillights*
XLT - halogen headlights (Hi & Lo), halogen fog lights, and LED taillights
XL - halogen headlights (Hi & Lo) and halogen taillights**

*Supply chain problems caused some MY Lariats to have XLT headlights
**Halogen fog lights were available as part of appearance packages for the XL (STX, Chrome, Special Edition)

Correction:

Lariat = LED - Headlights, Fogs & Taillights.

Good thing I got my LED's before I joined this forum. :) My Auxito's have been great. Nice clean cut off, just adjust them properly. I did switch to Lasfit for my fog lights. They default to white but turning them off and on switches them to amber. Again, nice clean cut off. https://www.lasfit.com/products/ld-series-h8-h11-h16-led-fog-light-bulb
