I can't imagine how little that AM radio adds to the price...actually I have never seen a radio that was not AM/FM, maybe they got a steal on FM only... cutbacks like this makes me think cheap tight wads and not frugal quality...ironic that here locally the Ford dealer lot was full of 90% used and 10% market adjusted new cars before the recession and increase in rates,now the lot is full of new vehicles, high rates and prices. I hope the have to sit on that inventory a while.

i noticed a lot of the aftermarket smart screen head units do not come with am now. id bet fords contractor with whatever china company is more the reason than saving any msrp.
i remember the cheap o package trucks only coming with Am radio... now they gettin rid of it. ?‍?

They should just remove the radio all together...I haven't used it since the invention of iphone and radio apps...Simple Radio and Pandora pretty much all I use...

I read somewhere that many electric vehicles don't have AM because it interferes with the car. That likely contributed to removing AM from ICE vehicles as well, as part of Ford's part simplifying plan.

Personally doesn't affect me, hell i can barely get any AM stations now.

Same reason you can hardly buy a manual transmission anymore. Not enough buyers want it. I haven’t listened to AM radio in my vehicle in a decade. I’m about to the same point with FM.

I listen to a lot of sports talk, political talk an news on AM. I drive about 5 hours a day doing deliveries an I check the main news station at the top an bottom of the hour for news an the traffic updates. I know there's apps that I can run but why when I can get my news an traffic without taking my eyes off the road.

When I am out and about in BFE and can't get a good fm station, I scan for AM stations. If I am not listening to my thumb drive songs I occasionally listen to local sports talk radio.

AM is one of those radio technologies that works like your spare tire.
It just hangs out and never gets used. But one day, you may be in a bit of a pickle and able to use it for information.

I remember when Hurricane Ike hit Houston, we had no local FM stations we could hear at first. Either antennas damaged or power was out. But we could get AM out of San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, New Orleans. Only way to get news and weather forecasts. Even NOAA Weather Radio was off line.

There‘s an AM station here that has news and traffic “on the 10s”, so if I was ever stuck in really heavy gridlock coming back into the city, I could switch to that station and, within 10 minutes, find out where the trouble spot was and get an idea of how long I might be stuck or choose a different route.

Now, I just ask Google maps for directions home and it shows me the congested areas and provides alternate routes.

I used to work for the "Famous automaker headquartered in Dearborn" in the Audio Systems area. AM is very susceptible to noise. We had a problem with the Variable Assist Power Steering module on the Lincoln Town Car back in 1990. The VAPS had a high current PWM signal and was obliterating the entire AM band. (fixed it by adding a capacitor)

I retired long before the EVs started coming to market, but with the motors, charging circuits, and Switch Mode regulators (such as converting the main battery voltage to 12V for the aux battery), there are a lot of PWM devices making noise. AM is such a low RF frequency that it requires a lot of filtering of these sources.

The AM circuitry in the radio (whatever that is these days..) adds a few dollars, but I really suspect that it is the cost of noise suppression for all of these switching circuits. It could also be that they just can't figure out how to get the noise reduced to an acceptable level
