I have a post out that was seeking recommendation on how to load my new machine. I figured I’d throw down a full recap of the experience now that I have returned from my trip!

To start: my truck is a ‘21 Crew STX FX4. I’m running 32” Toyo AT3 tires. 1” Bora wheel spacers. Fox 2.0 front and rear. Unleashed 91 octane Towing tune (for this trip).

My load: 7.5x16 utility tandem axle trailer (est. 2200lbs). Mahindra Roxor (3000lbs). Myself, my wife, coolers, tools, Mountain bikes, water, camping gear (est. 1000 lbs inside the truck).

The Trip: From my home in St. George Utah right on the AZ border up to a BLM site where we camped. First leg is to Cedar City via I-15 (3,033ft elevation gain at 70mph over 64 miles). Second leg is Cedar city up to the camp site (4800ft elevation gain over 35 miles, with several spots with 8-12% + grade). Then back down.

I loaded the machine and took off. You can absolutely feel the weight, but the engine did not seem to care. On the Interstate it would sway a bit when it got windy so I would kick it down to 60-65 and everything would smooth out. The wind off semi trucks would also cause a touch of sway so I opted to stick in the right lane. Once we started the big climb after Cedar City everything just went perfect. The truck never went over 3500 rpms. Some of the switch backs I slowed down to 15-20mph, and had to regain speed. No issue. Plenty of gears and plenty of low end power in EVERY gear.

My concern with the return trip was I am not equipped with trailer brakes nor a controller. So I’m relying on the truck to control a total GVW of about 10,400lbs down some very steep grades and sharp mountain switch backs. I kicked on “trailer mode” and to my surprise I hardly had to touch the brakes. I locked out of all gears above 4 on the steep stuff, and it never shifted out of 3rd. I did feather the brakes a bit but never had to press with more than my toe for a few seconds at a time. The engine held at about 3,200-3,500 rpms and kept everything at a comfortable speed without need for heavy brakes (if any brakes at all).

Also, upon my return I filled up and did the math. I averaged 14.9 mpg for the round trip. I gotta say I’m rather proud of this little truck I call Rudy!

Also the Mahindra Roxor is an AWESOME machine!

That trailer had no brakes at all ??? Thought it would have at least surge .
Glad you made it OK, but just coming down a grade is not the only thing you need to concern yourself with. Emergency braking is even more important....even on dry pavement, with panic braking would have caused a serious case of jackknife, or that trailer would have just kept pushing you forward. Wet road surface and your an accident looking for a place to happen.
If that is your trailer, and you plan more trips, seriously think about equipping it with a brake system.

Not mine. I’ll be in the market soon. I definitely want a tandem axle, and I do think it worth the investment to get something with brakes. The was the maiden voyage. Fortunately the maiden voyage was about the worst possible scenerio. Anything “normal” will be a breeze!

This includes your Ranger, right? It’s not just the trailer?

Before or after lunch?

I was there today as well - @subquark would be so jelly. Tons of turkey vultures and seagulls. It really is a disgusting place. ?

On the way back home, I Shazam’d Pearl Jam’s Last Kiss just to double-check and this came up…

Brakes, you need em. On the trailer.
Some of the hills at ft hood i could feel the trailer pushing the ranger.
But get brakes. Brake controllers are easy and can be inexpensive to put on the ranger. 4 wires under the dash.
I was at 12600 overweight i know and 900 tounge overweight i know. Trailer brakes where my best friend that day. And i drove through 2 rainstorms, and lots of wet roads.
Trailer brakes.

Wow, that much weight and no trailer brakes, over here anything over 750kg must have trailer brakes by law. Anything over 2000 kg and it must have breakaway brakes as well.

Wow, great testament to the mighty Ranger! And ... holy crap! =D

I did the Redarc Liberty (what a pain for this fatso to reach the wiring). And I also considered the bluetooth ones and know, from other members, that they work very well.

So like you said: "trailer brakes!" =)

note, not a FFR! =p

Yep I use a Redarc Tow pro Elite myself. I think that it is the same system that Ford fit if you order electric brakes. I put the box behind the drivers side kick panel, and the adjuster in the console.
