I have a post out that was seeking recommendation on how to load my new machine. I figured I’d throw down a full recap of the experience now that I have returned from my trip!
To start: my truck is a ‘21 Crew STX FX4. I’m running 32” Toyo AT3 tires. 1” Bora wheel spacers. Fox 2.0 front and rear. Unleashed 91 octane Towing tune (for this trip).
My load: 7.5x16 utility tandem axle trailer (est. 2200lbs). Mahindra Roxor (3000lbs). Myself, my wife, coolers, tools, Mountain bikes, water, camping gear (est. 1000 lbs inside the truck).
The Trip: From my home in St. George Utah right on the AZ border up to a BLM site where we camped. First leg is to Cedar City via I-15 (3,033ft elevation gain at 70mph over 64 miles). Second leg is Cedar city up to the camp site (4800ft elevation gain over 35 miles, with several spots with 8-12% + grade). Then back down.
I loaded the machine and took off. You can absolutely feel the weight, but the engine did not seem to care. On the Interstate it would sway a bit when it got windy so I would kick it down to 60-65 and everything would smooth out. The wind off semi trucks would also cause a touch of sway so I opted to stick in the right lane. Once we started the big climb after Cedar City everything just went perfect. The truck never went over 3500 rpms. Some of the switch backs I slowed down to 15-20mph, and had to regain speed. No issue. Plenty of gears and plenty of low end power in EVERY gear.
My concern with the return trip was I am not equipped with trailer brakes nor a controller. So I’m relying on the truck to control a total GVW of about 10,400lbs down some very steep grades and sharp mountain switch backs. I kicked on “trailer mode” and to my surprise I hardly had to touch the brakes. I locked out of all gears above 4 on the steep stuff, and it never shifted out of 3rd. I did feather the brakes a bit but never had to press with more than my toe for a few seconds at a time. The engine held at about 3,200-3,500 rpms and kept everything at a comfortable speed without need for heavy brakes (if any brakes at all).
Also, upon my return I filled up and did the math. I averaged 14.9 mpg for the round trip. I gotta say I’m rather proud of this little truck I call Rudy!
Also the Mahindra Roxor is an AWESOME machine!
