The tank is actually 20 gallons. I’ve run it to where I put 19.5 gallons in on pump cut off, and the truck still ran well on steep inclines, declines, and corners, indicating there was at least some gas in the tank.

Do I recommend it? No, but if towing and all you can find is a gas station 15 miles past 0, it definitely can make it. The reserve feels like it’s 2 gallons.

It could have a built in minimum. Is it exactly 240? And what happens as you drive?

I have noticed that, when I fill it it goes to 283 to empty, and when it hits zero thats a joke too, I have driven 15 miles past that, not sure I will push it much more LOL

I never push it that far. lol Usually I fill up at 1/4 tank but one time we were heading up to Flagstaff (gas was well over $4.00 at the time) and I was 2 exits away and had under 20 MTE on the dash. There's a Sam's Club there and I wanted to fill up there. When I filled up it was just over 18 gallons and I never did that again. The Polish in me almost bit me in the ass that day.

you just popped a great big bubble over my head, thanks. I'm on a road trip, by the time I reached my destination for the day, I was down to 7 miles to "E", but when I filled the tank, it was 18.264 gallons, which blew my mind because I thought it was only 18 gallons even. ah well... ;-)

I once put 21 gal in a toyota I had in Fla that too was an 18 gal tank, they are only tested to start at 0 not that they are accurate by any means!
they know most people would never catch them being off by 10%!

And that is why when we're traveling, I carry this in the bed. Don't carry it around town, just when on the road towing.
Our "25 mile rescue buffer" !!! (2 1/2 gallons at 10-12 mpg towing)

Anything is possible but in Massachusetts someone from the local weights and measures goes to all gas stations periodically and checks how accurately they dispense fuel by filling a container and comparing the known amount in the container to what the pump states. If it is off by anymore than what is allowed the pump has to be corrected before it can be used again. They also, apply a tamper seal to ensure the pumps aren't messed with. The state also goes around doing unannounced spot checks to make sure pumps are accurate too.

The Ranger has an 18.8 gallon tank, (almost 19).

Thanks for the info guys...was wondering about that too. When towing, I have gotten "caught out" once or twice, and have put as much as 17.9 gallons in, but the miles-to-empty still says 20-25 miles left...so it must be at least 18.8 or so. It gets 26 MPG in normal driving, but only 12-13 when towing and does seem to take a couple of miles/fillups or resets to get back to 26 after trailer is unhooked.

well then. glad to know that there's at least some kind of buffer if I have to push it that far. and that it's that close to the tank volume stated in the manual. I'll commonly get it down close to the 50mi to go mark (when the gas light comes on), but dash lights bug me so I go fill up then.

wife's Toyota is infuriating with the distance to go/fuel light business. According to the fuel tank volume listed in the manual, when the "distance to go" reaches 0, there's still 2 gallons of fuel in there. And given that her car is a hybrid that gets 35mpg on a bad day (she commonly gets over 50mpg on her commute in optimal conditions), 2 gallons is a LOT of range.

Last thing you want to do is completely drain the fuel tank by running until empty (engine shut off), lest you burn up a fuel pump or suck sediment.

For some of those gallons filled fluctuations, could that come from filling past the tank and a ways up the fill neck?
