Hi All,

I have a very loud, very intermittent squealing/squeaking sound coming from the truck. It sounds like the sound a loose fan belt would make but that definitely does not appear to be the case. Sometimes it appears to come from the front drivers side and others from the mid passenger side.

It does not happen on every drive and seems to come on around 40km/h and is primarily in colder temperatures. There is no sound @ 20km/h ish or below or at idle. Ford cannot find the issue, I have about 30k on the truck, I do not trust this truck to begin with and this certainly doesnt help:frown: pretty sure I have a lemon?.

Unfortunately my sound clip will not attach properly but will try to sort that on my laptop. Anyone with thoughts on what it might be?

Thanks!

Could be the air coming into the cabin air box. That's on the passenger side. In my old f150 I pulled a piece of plastic wrap material that was there. I would check to make sure nothing is blocking that air causing a squeal.

After reading a few more similar posts I am pretty sure this is the driveshaft bearing issue that a few others have experienced. Hopefully Ford can resolve.

Hi Paul,

Need a better description. Squeak is rythematic with a pause between sounds, a Squeal is long and continuous. Driveshaft is a prime candidate if a squeal but likely not a squeak. It can be really hard to diagnose over the forums..Sorry to butt in here but could be windnoise or dash sealing etc. Need more clarification. Don't bother with sound clips...my hearing is toast even with hearing aids. Does it do it in cruise or acceleration or deceleration?

Best,
Phil

Hey Phil,

Thanks, cant say I have ever thought about the difference between a squeak and a squeal:) but yes you are right....a squeal is a much better description in this case. I have not tried it in cruise, and of course it was not making the sound this morning so it is very hard to replicate (also for ford). I played my recording of it for my local dealer yesterday and they were all concerned but did not make any initial diagnosis. It is scheduled for service next week.

Once started around 30km/h the frequency and intensity does not seem to change much (albeit perhaps a slightly more "wound up" noise with more speed, it is very loud haha, it definitely sounds mechanical as opposed to a wind/sealing issue etc. It is not affected by RPM at all and is non existent below 20k ish.

Truck is a November/December 2020 build.

Hi Paul,

Is the RPM increase associated with vehicle speed change? Reason is if vehicle speed change does not affect the squeal, then it is likely not the center bearing of the two piece driveshaft. If it does change then likely center bearing.... NVH issues are very hard to diagnose over the forums so when I get picky on squeak and squeal it is for a reason, not to be a smart A$$.

Best,
Phil

How good is your hearing? It is possible it changes tone with higher speed too but you have issues hearing higher frequencies. Just a thought.

Ford has diagnosed this problem as "excessive play" in the rear driveshaft steady bearing. They have ordered a replacement driveshaft...hopefully this will resolve the issue.

This replacement was done under warranty a few days ago and appears to have fixed the issue.

A bit concerning that a critical piece like this had to be replaced at 30k but all good for now!

What I find more concerning os that they had to replace the whole driveshaft assembly for what amounts to a bad pillowblock bearing.

Mine was the shaft carrier bearing and a few other things they replaced. Happened at 5000 miles. I now have 13000 and it has not happened again. Sounded exactly like a slipping fan belt on an older car. Put in neutral and revved motor; sound does not change.
