Good morning all. I'm trying to install a tailgate assist, but I can't remove the tailgate bolt because it is painted over. Using a (corded) drill with the T50 torx but it won't budge.

Any ideas how i can get it loose without stripping the head? I would greatly appreciate any input.

You need to go to a buddy (or Advanced Auto or just a "gas" station that has a mechanic) who has a proper ratchet and 50mm socket and it will pop loose no problem. If you have rounded this torx (socket or bolt head) out, use the ratchet/torx on the other side... I think they/it can go on either side (but double check first).

Use a 1/2 inch ratchet and a good torx socket. A drill doesn't have enough torque, but an impact wrench will.

I just used my 1/2" ratchet and but and it worked fine. IIRC you have to go forward and back a couple of times and it takes a little work but it'll come off as soon as you break the paint seal.

Just remember you'll never be able to do this again after the atrophy sets in from of using the damper but it's well worth it.

I see what you have , you need to use a 90 Deg Pick / Awl - and carefully clean out the bolt head - if you are talking about the forward bolt.

Damn, the old Dave would have ran right over for any damper issues...
Inflation, can't afford it anymore. :piggybank:

Now it's drop off service only.
