Actually on the Ranger if you didn't know better (as we do), the fuel door appears to be locked if you try to pull on it. Only the savvy saboteur would think to push on it to release it.
There is no latching mechanism on the gas cap/door. Pushing the door only pops a button up to open the door enough to grab the door egde...

If you are worried about someone putting sugar in you gas tank it doesn't matter if they can get to the filler or not. Opening some sugar packets and sprinkling them on the ground has the same effect as putting them in the filler. Especially for someone as paranoid as you.

Wondering if anyone's identified a solution yet for locking the gas cap?
The locking gas cap in the photo works. With that part number you shop for a better price. Good luck dude!

Another site says it's not compatible. Do you have an image you can post with it on?

It's nice to live in a quite neighborhood with Sheriffs, detectives and patrol vehicles parked in their driveway to deter any stupid ideas...2A country baby...:p

I am more amused that Ford didn’t just have the hatch lock with a release in the cabin like many other vehicles.
Here in SE Asia the gas door is tied to the door locks. Have to unlock electrically.

I think a 12" screw driver can open this pop can...
Yep.... hard to stop a determined individual... but for those that might see a non-locked fuel filling opening as just an opportunity of convenience (meaning the left their 12" screw driver home) this should be enough of an obstacle to have them just keep moving on.

Wouldn't the anti-siphon device built into the fill neck be more effective than a cap? Then there's the plastic gas tank that conveniently provides safe spark free drilling... ?

With a step bit and 20 gallon RV roll around sewer drain they can drain it in under 2 minutes. Stuff a screwdriver in the fill to act as a vent.

Given that they would be drilling from the bottom of the tank (vs from the top) very little chance of fire as liquid gasoline does not burn... only the vapors... unless of course the tank is near empty... then they get what they deserve... but as you note, plastic tank, no spark, no just rewards.

As to anti-siphon, I'm more worried about bad stuff going in rather than fuel being siphoned.
