Got a new phone the other day and now I’m having trouble with the apple CarPlay app. My phone connects to the ranger via Bluetooth but CarPlay isn’t showing up in the menu at all. I disconnected my old phone from the truck and tried to connect my new one but nothing happens.

I messed around with the menu and settings for 30 mins yesterday but can’t seem to figure it out. CarPlay functions normally with my work truck (f550) and only took a minute to set up. For some reason, I’m struggling to get the ranger connected. Not sure if it’s me doing something wrong, the phone, or the truck that’s having issues…

After I removed/unpaired my old phone from the ranger, the CarPlay app disappeared from the truck menu. I looked up how to re-setup CarPlay with a new phone, it says to press and hold the speech prompt button. When I do that, it tries to connect but says no devices found. Even though the phone is paired with the ranger’s bluetooth and shows up in the devices menu. Not sure what’s going on.

Yeah, it’s plugged in. I tried it plugged in an unplugged too. (Didn’t know wireless CarPlay wasn’t a thing though.) Maybe I just got in the habit of always plugging my phone in so never noticed lol

Eric I'm just chiming in because you're not getting a lot of replies on this -

I went through a similar issue with Android Auto and a new Android (Pixel) phone and I ended up having to do a factory reset of the Sync 3 head unit.

My issue sounds like it was slightly different than yours as I was getting an "Initializing Android Auto" message on the screen that never resolved itself / went away. It reads like you're not getting any messages, so maybe slightly different.

My theory is that there's something stored in the Sync 3 head unit system cache that needs to be cleared, but since there's no option to delete memory on the head unit the only option I could think of was a factory reset.

There's no downside to trying this aside from needing to re-pair everything via bluetooth, and the truck will be removed from your Ford Pass app so you will need to set that up again, but it doesn't take too long. For me the factory reset took about 10 minutes, and setting up the phone again took about 5 minutes. But ever since I've done that, my phone has connected flawlessly to Android Auto via cable and via my wireless adapter.

Could be worth a shot!

I might try doing that when I get some time this weekend. I was trying to avoid having to factory reset everything, but that might be the best option. It’s odd that CarPlay connected to my work truck with no issues but the ranger is having trouble. That leads me to assume the problem is with the truck, not the phone or CarPlay app.

I have this problem, but only once in awhile. When it happens, if I recall correctly, Apple Carplay will not pop up again until I restart the vehicle. Very frustrating on roadtrips when I need the Google Maps. lol

I’ve had issues with the wired CarPlay working off and on. I simply unplug the USB on the truck side and plug it back in. If that doesn’t work, I’ve swapped USB ports and that almost always gets things connected. It hasn’t been an issue enough for me to dig into anything looking for a permanent fix. Also, check your USB cable. Make sure it’s a changing/syncing cable. Some also work better than others.

I had it happen to me today, 😩….. I did exactly what you said, pulled over at the local gas station and re-started the truck and shazam it worked. BTW, this is not the first time this has happened. I have accepted the fact that there are some bugs in Sync 3 like driving down the road and the damn things goes black and reboots on its own, apple car play not connecting, etc. I use to think the updates would fix these issue, nope!! I stoped updating it a year ago….

I do carry spare USB-C cable, as I did have cable break on me before. I've also tried switch over to the other USB connector/outlet, but I don't think that's ever worked for me.

Scarzanger 21 (2.0),

Here are a couple of options for you.

Of note, I did all of these in succession due to the fact that my IPhone 17 Pro would not initiate the Apple CarPlay when plugged in. In the end, I did get Apple CarPlay to work again with a specific cable brand—Anker (and no, I am not getting any kickbacks from them).

While doing research on my predicament, I read a post on one of the forums stating to try either Anker or Beats as they seem to work better than most other brands.

At any rate, here are the steps to try:

1. Allow CarPlay on the iPhone
On the iPhone:
1 Settings → General → CarPlay
2 Confirm the Ranger shows up.
3 If it’s listed under “My Cars,” tap it and make sure CarPlay is enabled.
If you see a prompt on the iPhone asking to Allow CarPlay While Locked, select Allow.

2. Restart Devices
• Restart your iPhone.
• Turn your Ranger off and back on (cycle the ignition fully).
• After rebooting both, reconnect the cable or attempt pairing again.

3. Reset Connections
If still not working:
1 Forget the Ranger from the iPhone:
◦ Settings → General → CarPlay → Your Ranger → Forget This Car
2 Disconnect the cable.
3 Reboot the iPhone.
4 Reconnect and watch for the SYNC prompt to allow CarPlay.

4. Check iPhone Settings
• Turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth OFF then ON (even if using a cable).
• Turn Airplane Mode ON for ~10 seconds, then OFF.
• Disable any restrictions:
◦ Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Allowed Apps
◦ Make sure CarPlay is allowed.

5. Update Software
• Update your iPhone to the latest iOS (Settings → General → Software Update).
• Check if your Ranger’s SYNC system has an update available (Ford owners can update via USB, WiFi, or through a dealer I believe).

6. Try a Different Cable / Port
• Test with another Apple/certified cable.
• Try a different USB port in the Ranger as well.
• Avoid USB hubs or adapters.

7. Reset SYNC Settings (last resort)
On the Ranger touchscreen:
1 Settings → General → Advanced → Master Reset
(This resets SYNC settings — not your truck — but you’ll have to re-pair devices. There may be a few more steps in this particular process so research throughly before you proceed.)

Best of luck,
NOMAD

Make sure you are on version 3.4.23188. If anything older, get it updated to solve a number of long term Sync 3 issues.

- for sure try a different cable. For some reason the Ranger is highly sensitive to even the slightest of damage to a cable.
- make sure your iPhone is unlocked and the notification tray swiped down and visible when you plug it into the Ranger. There might be a pop up waiting for you to confirm that you want the iPhone is release its security block on a new vehicle. It’s usually some kind of “do you want to allow CarPlay with this device” and it’s unique to each car.
- anytime the truck doesn’t sense my iPhone I do a soft reset of sync. The volume button + the fast forward button held for like 5 or 10 seconds. That ALWAYS fixes my CarPlay connection issue. Please note, the phone needs to be unplugged during the reset for some reason.

This.

The 2-FingerSYNC Salute almost always resolves any CarPlay issues I experience.

I'm using a wireless CarPlay adapter and I've had about the same CarPlay issues using the wireless adapter as I did when I was wired.

I think it's just SYNC being SYNC.

My CarPlay issues, black screen etc, was solved by updating sync 3.
I also added wireless CarPlay, which was cheap and works flawlessly

I have one of those - but probably a different brand. I've really been pleased with it except for one issue. If I try to set a destination via speaking to it, I always get the response that 'I don't know where you are'.
