I think the main concern here is that if it does deform, it will likely stay deformed so then your strap will be loose. Also, 400lbs of load does not necessarily mean "can hold 400lb objects". If you have something heavy strapped in and either mash on the gas/brake, have to corner sharply, or make an abrupt maneuver you could easily apply more than 400lbs of load to the tie down.

Additionally, they were rated for 400lbs of load before they were modified. Without knowing the exact make up of that 3" flat stock it's hard telling what it can actually support.

I think everyone just wants you to be careful and make sure you see how they perform with lighter objects before strapping in something rather heavy.

So you feel these would not hold that? im sure you never strap it to just one point ?
I think part of Phil's point is that with the official Ford tiedown, users don't have to rely on what they "feel" it may or may not hold because it has been thoroughly tested and has been rated accordingly.

Your version, on the other hand, incorporates a metal bar that is completely untested and unrated. It will probably work for routine use, but just beware that you're dealing with an unknown here.

My only concern with this would be with the flat bar really..there’s no structural rigidity or bends in it to give it strength. It’s a short span of 3 inches so it’s not long and wobbly but cheap thin flat bar stock tends to give a lot and it COULD not would deform under certain conditions.
I agree 100% and cant think of anything that would rip through that steel if it was strapped down properly with two or more hooks. could you pull a car with it, no. these are too hold things down in your bed. what could you possibly haul that would rip through that?

I suppose if you're a BigFoot hunter and catch one, you'd need some decent tie downs, and that kind of makes the $90 for two seem reasonable ...

In looking into it I found another thread on here that says the factory tie downs are rated for 661 lbs. idk what they can max out at but I guess that would be the number to shoot for

Google "footman loop" and take your pick...
Now that could be a option for sure. I never knew what they were called. now just to find them the right length. but who knows what those are rated? I just know I do not have the need to spend $80 for two tie downs.

Any idea of ratings? I was worried about just one bolt holding the item down.
Hi Buddy,

Without testing what it takes to pull through just one threaded hole in the pickup box, I think you can take the OEM tie down rating cut in half. Rating is 661 lbs for the OEM tie down so 330 lbs might be a good working number. I have several of these stainless I bolts and use them frequent more than the OEM tie downs of which I have six...

From the owner's manual
Ford Tie down rating.webp

I would like to know what you carry in your truck that would be over 400# load or 1200# break stregnth? These are way stronger than anything most of us will ever haul.
Chill out Buddy……. lol ?
