removed the air filter today for cleaning and was greeted with this. ??? seems really cottony, so only thing i can come up with as a cause is there has been alot of the cottonlike crap falling from the cottonwood trees in the area. or do i have a varmint problem? any ideas?

WOW! My guess is if it's 100% the cottony tree pollen then it may very well be just from pollen shedding season. I agree - rodents are usually not dedicated to one material. No poop? No hair? No food scraps? Seems unusual for Mickey Mouse.

it literally looks and feels like something you would find if you tore open a pillow from years ago. some small dark thingsy but too small to be mouse poop. no food scraps. at least i should get a slight performance increase after removing it.

Cottonwood. Just cleaned a bunch like that from my tractor radiator screen. Looks like it's snowing here from those seed pods. But how did so much get in there?

i owned my raptor for ten years here and removed the filter a ton of times but never had anything like this. maybe just a bad year for those seed pods. i know i have had a few floating around inside the cab at times

It looks too coarse to be cottonwood fluff, around here cottonwood is more filament-y; clogs the cooling fins on my house A/C condenser. Batting from a disposable diaper can look like that after it has ben wet. Those that have dumped a load of toddler clothes from a diaper bag into the washing machine and didn't see the diaper would agree...

Do you have Willow or Poplar trees around? Those shed something similar to that.
