Think about it....how much of the stuff you carry in your bed is "metal" ?.
I have a bed rug, large polymer storage case, two rubber totes, a swing box.
I've carried a set of wheels/tires to deliver, plenty of wood, some gardening stuff for my wife, a recliner for delivery, some aluminum channel pieces (non magnetic) and a few odds n ends. Nothing metal that a magnet would hold, and nothing a simple tie down wouldn't work on.
Silly future bed accessory....just another geehaw so owners ban brag about it....
"Oh, you have a 27 way tailgate on your GM, but I have a MAGNET !!!"

And, Ford is paying some designer a 6 figure salary to come up with this poop !!!

It’s just a patent. Does not mean they are seriously considering developing this feature.

I know, but....at one time a home computer was just a "patent", and look where we are now...

True.

When I worked at Motorola the engineers would get a small bonus ($100) when they submitted an internal patent idea. This was purely a technical idea and not necessarily something that could be marketed to customers. The company believed that to get one useable idea they needed a culture where the engineers were thinking about patentable ideas and tech.

A senior team of engineers, managers, and marketing people would review these submissions and determine which ones to pursue. If an idea passed this test the engineer or team would get another bonus (I think $500). Now patent lawyers would get involved and do a detailed patent search for previous patents that may have already been filed and granted.

Finally after all this, a senior team reviews all the info and decides whether or not to file a formal patent application. The engineer or team get another amount ($1000, I believe). Patent lawyers then write up the patent application and submit it to the Patent Office. If the patent was granted by the Patent Office, another bonus was granted and the engineers involved would get an invite to the yearly Patent Awards dinner.

As you may imagine pursuing a patent gets expensive (engineering, patent lawyer, and marketing time involved).

Why did the engineers get bonuses? Remember that the company, not the engineers own the patent. Hence the reason for some money to get the engineers to put in the extra effort.

I know to much info….

How about someone come up with a powered hard topper that acts like Iron Man's helmet.
Press a button and it retracts to a hidden position on the top front bed rail.. Hit the button again and it expands to become a hard topper like a Leer.
Common you Ford engineers, come up with something useful.....

In all the trucks I've even owned I've never once thought a magnetized bed would solve a problem for me. A bed liner with a bed mat and tie downs has always been able to hold any load I've ever had. Now with my bed extender it's even better as I just leave it in there flipped inside so I can corral stuff closer to the front.

If they really want to get creative patent dual integrated dampers with a remote control tailgate you can control from your fob. :bandit:?

Never once heard someone say "I wish my truck bed a had magnets".

Know whats more effective ford? Tie downs, ford, tie downs....
Oh your bin isn't sticking good in the middle of the tailgate? Sorry you have to purchase the extra middle magnet...we only provide 2 on the outside of the tailgate not the middle one
