Some of us discussed in another thread that had the topic of LSPI (low speed pre-ignition) and the causes of this phenomenon come up because of a catastrophic engine failure that on the surface looks similar to an LSPI failure (though this is in no way confirmed and could just be coincidence). While this failure is very remote in as it is the only one reported so far in the 5g Ranger community, it is worth paying attention to.

LSPI is a phenomenon with many believed causes, but none of them seem to be the only cause so there are things that can be done to minimize the issue. I will post an article below about LSPI, but the reason for this post is one possible cause which is lugging under high load at a low rpm. It is advised to avoid this if you can, but our trucks, even with tunes (maybe especially with tunes since the torque production is even higher than stock by a wide margin so they lug easier), have a tendency to lug in the overdrive gears and hold these way too long at low rpm high load unless we force a downshift. Various things can happen here to cause LSPI. A manual downshift is a good strategy to use instead of a quick throttle stab because of the possible pressure spike that could cause LSPI. It would have been nice if Ford had not been so concerned with fuel mileage that they would have programmed the transmission to hold gears longer and downshift sooner. Sport mode is a good compromise, but its gear holding is often too aggressive for daily driving and fuel mileage. Honestly the mileage does not suffer if the engine is kept at or near 2000-2500rpm during normal cruise. A lower rear end ratio of a bout 4:30 would have been perfect, with a better shift strategy, but again that dreaded fuel mileage rating was more important...

So, I talked to Torrie at Unleashed Tuning and told him just what was occurring and what I needed (hold gears a little longer but not as aggressive as Sport, and downshift sooner to keep the engine in its cruise sweet spot. All to prevent lugging.). His tune already makes some effort to prevent this, but I thought more could be done. In true Torrie fashion he got back to me in a day with a tune that is about as perfect in Normal drive mode (which is the mode we are talking about here) as you can get. It is so good that I am hesitant to push things further since programming these A10s with all of their different strategies can be very complex and finicky. This is how it should have came from the factory.

So, if this is a concern and you have an Unleashed tune, then reach out to Torrie and ask about what he did for me. He will recognize the username.

If you do not have an Unleashed tune, then you can still talk to your tuner. Just be specific.

So glad Unleashed did you right on this concern. I too noticed the same. Even with FP tune Normal was cruising at 45mph in 10th gear. Sport was holding RPM too high during cruise. Tow with the FP tune has been the sweet spot for me. It seems to downshift more readily in tow too thinking I have a trailer attached and need the powerband even though I’m towing nothing. It has provided a great driving experience and tow mode disables the engine auto start/stop by default too which I appreciate.

Props to Unleashed/Torrie for staying on top of this.

I've been taking the tune off when towing - not an issue for other Ecoboost motors in sedans I think - and 'lugging' would be the death of a complicated turbo motor used like this. Even with the stock Ford programming I found myself manually downshifting on the highway when I last hauled stuff.

Pretty cool.

I've been following said thread and he really took care of that quickly. I'm not tuned, currently weighing options, and this is a tick in their "pro" column.

I've been avoiding D since noticing some uphill lugging. I've had multiple turbo powered cars with manuals and never really had to worry about the car protecting itself. I figured the 10spd would be a little better at getting out of high gear on a grade.

Good excuse to stay in "S" I suppose.

For towing, Unleashed has a towing tune if you want.

I’m convinced they do testing either in the mountains or where it’s flat as a pancake. Here in NC near Charlotte, it has really annoying hills and the transmission wants to stay in too high of a gear for too long. I’m gonna try tow mode for a while and see how I like it. S mode was too aggressive for daily driving as it held high RPMs for too long. I may get a tune just to make the transmission shift intelligently rather than trying to squeeze out 1 or 2 more MPG at the expense of long term reliability.

I bet, and I'm pretty confident he could engineer a pretty good one. He's tweaked my mid-grade performance tune several times but for as infrequently as I tow I don't want to pay hundreds of dollars for another tune. It's easy to just drop the truck to stock and re-load the perf tune when I'm back to daily driving. Of the 20,000 miles I've got so far only 2,000 has been with a loaded trailer.

Another day down and still doing great. The new strategy is 10X better than stock or anything another tuner gave me. It is probably 90% perfect, but I am not going to mess with it. If anything, I have learned from another tuning experience (different tuner) that with this 10 speed you can start chasing your tail with issues and cause things do go down hill fast if you try too much.

As an example of how much he worked on this, I was on version 3 of my current 93 Performance tune (I have many from Unleashed) and the version Torrie finally gave me with the new shifting strategy was version 6. So he kept working at it to get it just right. I guess he would program and then think about it, go back and revise, etc. I never had to be the test subject. I just got version 6 within a day and it was ready. Versions 4-5 never touched my truck.

Torrie does a great job with programming!

He really does and the service you get with response time, etc. is great. I should have went with him from the start, but I had no idea he was doing Rangers.

I just emailed Torrie asking if he's be willing to share your tune! I've tried 5-Star, SSI, Gearheads and probably 1-2 others I can't think of and BY FAR Torrie's tunes are the best! Smooth, easy to drive, shifts great and all the power your want...when you want it!

How much of an improvement was towing with the ford tune. Is it work it?

Hopefully it will work for you. Like I said, I think it could be pushed further, but from what I have found if you go too far with these transmissions you run into other issues to correct and that leads to a cascading effect of one thing after the other. This is so much better than stock in normal mode that I think it is best left alone. What is nice is that if the adaptive strategy of the computer tries to be sneaky and make it hold a gear too much, it just takes a little throttle and it kicks into a lower gear and then holds that for you until the load is lessened again.

Of course I already received the file from Super Fast Torrie! I'll be loading it up shortly! I'll let you know my thoughts. Thanks!
