For anyone that has driven the new Ranger, can you hear the turbo spooling up ?? Wife (now ex) had a 2008 Volvo C30 T5....couldn't hear the turbo at all, but then again, it was a Volvo.... Loved the sound of it on my 2007 F-250.

It's been my experience with Ford Ecoboost engines that you can hear the turbo. I've driven many F150s all that make the turbo noise and my Fiesta makes it every time you hit the gas or let off the gas. I've heard it from the outside on a neighbor's Mustang as well. By contrast, my wife has a Hyundai Tucson with a turbo and you cannot hear it nor do you feel that sudden kick of power when it kicks in.

Granted my test drive was in San Francisco and consisted of about 14 blocks total with traffic. I only had a couple of short stretches to get on it hard. I don't remember hearing the turbo wine like the F150 2.7. There was a slight turbo lag like all turbos have but not terrible.

It's a whole thread, so check out the whole thing. There is about 5-6 videos of road tests of the new Ranger.

At 6:35 in the video he gets on the gas. You can hear a little rumble but no turbo wine and that was what I remember from my test drive. I agree with his assessment of the acceleration that it is "peppy not fast"

Subtract the 4WD and the Crewcab options along with the associated paraphernalia and see what happens to "Peppy"....
Still, It was pretty impressive, even with all that.

It would be nice if you could turn off the fake engine noise...I'd rather hear the turbo spooling up. I'll bet there is something that quiets the turbo.

I picked up my Lariat FX4 today- and this was one of my questions too. You can hear the turbo....with the window cracked. The sound deadening in the cabin is good enough that you can barely hear it with the windows up. If you really want to hear it all the time, you'd just need to replace the inlet pipes with an aluminum hardpipe and it'll sound like jet engine winding up...

How hard would that be ? Is it even feasible ?

Supposedly the Focus (ST or RS) has box you can unplug to make sound sumposer go away. There was a thread about it here somewhere. I never bothered with it on my ST, but you could easily hear the turbo on it, and even a bit of the pressure valve release too. It was a fun car.

Here's what changing the intake on the 2.3L turbo can do for 'intake honk'. :sunglasses:

Any fake engine/exhaust sound pumped through the speakers can be turned off through Forscan. I did it on my 17 Fusion Sport but it defeats any active noise cancelation as well.
