First to have...Ranger Stolen

I believe hiding the key in the back will work, heres why. With my key in the front I cant lock it in(no keypad yet), but on a recent trip it took my spare key in a duffle bag with my clothes in the rear seat, I could lock them in no problem and truck would not start with just the spare in back seat. So I think if the key is hidden far enough away from the dash in the back, you can lock and they could not start if they got in.

Yes it will work, but maybe a better option is to keep your key with you in a waterproof container like this.

Ok, I lied, lol. So I had to move my truck, so I did a couple tests with just the bare fob and the truck would start no matter where I put it, oops, wrong again. Maybe it was because it was in a bag inside my gear bag, who knows.

Amazon has a small foil lined key pouch I put my keys in and put them under the rear seat. At least the truck won't detect them and somebody would have to really look to find them

Sorry to hear your truck was stolen. Glad that you were able to find it with Ford Pass.

I was thinking that maybe a tech savvy thief was able use a device to talk to the key you had in the console and get it to unlock and start it. Since people are talking foil lined pouches I'm guessing that may be what happened. Creepy also to think that they might have intercepted the signal from your phone if you used that to lock / unlock your truck.

I can't speak for copying the wireless key fob signal (I know in the past it's been shockingly easy, one of the reasons I was glad the xlt wasn't push button) but intercepting the signal from your phone the vehicle is most likely outside the realm of any realistic scenario. The signal is most likely encrypted end to end and if that sort of encryption was broken you'd have a lot more to worry about than your car being stolen, the internet as we know it wouldn't function.

you can hide the key in a faraday bag to keep them from using it. Also you need to secure the key inside the house because someone can copy electronic signal if key is kept close enough to the exterior of the home for the signal to reach.

Of course the thief is the one who is [morally] at fault, but the moral of the story is still, do not leave your keys (of any kind) in any vehicle (especially your new Ranger)!

After a few times accidently locking my key in the trunk, I've become paranoid and in the habit of carrying both keys with me. That may be tough to do with the large Ranger key.

Haven't had that problem happen in a long time and not likely in a truck. Maybe its time to learn new habits when my truck gets here.

I didn't mean to kick off any sort of victim blaming conversation. It sucks that the truck was stolen, and by no means is it your fault, even if you left it running in the driveway with the keys in it (though if you tell that to the insurance company, they won't cover it). I was/am just trying to learn from the situation, knowing that I leave my keys in my Escape today, and specifically ordered the keypad so I could do so in the Ranger. It's a much lower severity issue that someone broke into my vehicle and stole ______ compared to someone broke into my vehicle and stole my vehicle.

Yeah, I've been known to lose my keys so hence why I had it in there. But as everyone mentioned once the new key and existing key is re-programmed the old one won't work anymore. So they could open the vehicle door but if you don't have the programmed key the alarm goes off within 10 seconds of that happening. So I would feel pretty comfortable not changing out the key cylinders at least right away. Maybe eventually.

I was able to order a new key from carandtruckremotes.com for around $60 (Rem10 for 10% off) and the local locksmith said he would cut the new key and reprogram it for $95. Not a terrible price compared to the dealer cost.

In the mean time parking it in my parents garage on the other side of the city until I can get the keys reprogrammed. Don't need a round two of someone taking my truck!

Bro. I got one of these on my F150. My mech. Locked himself out and called me. Easy fix.
