Hi all,

I just bought a used 2021 Ranger which had about 4k miles on it. I took the car back to the dealer for an inspection (I was registering in a different state than the prior owner) and while it was there they reset the oil change indicator. Not sure why they did that, and I confirmed with them afterwards that they did not change the oil, but here we are. I guess it's a minor thing, and mistakes happen, but it's really annoying to me that they did this.

So now the car has almost 5k miles on it and the oil life says 100%. I think it was around 80% or so when I brought it in. I was wondering how many miles people usually need to change their oil for the first time. Is there any downside to my changing it at 5k miles so I know it's done?

There are so many different answers as to when to change oil and type to use. For me, every 5K to 6K is about right. Some will take close to 10K and change when the oil life meter gets to 10%, some will do it old school every 3K.
In your case, I would get it done just to be sure.

Welcome to the forum Todd.

As others have said, change the oil now and reset the reminder.

My first change came at around 6K, give or take. I guess you could drive it a bit and see if the computer decides there's 25% life remaining on the oil, just as a test. But yeah, I'd change it by 6K.

Well stated above. Do it now and reset it yourself.

Change the oil now. That reset's going to screw things up.

Why the hell would they reset the OLM but not change the oil?
I'd take it to a different dealer from now on.
Synthetic oil, Motorcraft filter, every 5000 miles.

I do 5K for the simple math involved in reminding me

better to frequent than infrequent

no harm doing too often other than your wallet

oh wait, someone will have to comment and say, more chances to cross the threads ?

have you ordered a damper from @AzScorpion yet? rumor has it he also has a special on a detailing product too ???

No harm in changing the oil now. Sync OLM with change and drive happy. 8k plus minus is my regular OCI.
