Lifetime warranties are sometimes deceiving. Sometimes the lifetime warranty is still bound by a certain amount of mileage. They don't take into consideration how old the vehicle is, just the milage.
Oh, and good luck with Gub'ment Motors.

I may have this same noise. Sounds like pinging to me. I took it to dealer and made them check EVERYTHING. Couldn’t find anything except my turbo waste gate rod was rattling. They replaced that but no change to the noise.
Now that I see others hear possibly the same noise, maybe it’s just a quirk these trucks have? My Tacoma and 4Runner had the same motor and both made the same weird noises.

I just bought a 2019 Ranger in March from the Ford dealership that originally sold it It had bad rattle, sewing machine noise in the valve train at idle, and was constantly there regardless of RPM.
Once I changed the Ford oil out of it and replaced it with good oil, it's now quiet and smooth.

The ONLY way I've found to get things done is to call up Ford at (800) 392-3673. It's worth waiting on hold for a bit. If Ford emailed you a request for feedback, fill that out. That survey got a significant response from the dealership. I went from getting the runaround from the service advisor, him not answering or returning calls, to getting a personal call from the service manager. I was very pleasant with him, we commiserated about having trouble hiring people, and I reiterated that I didn't want to cause issues, Ford reached out to me asking about my experience. He made me an appointment for a few days later, and when I brought it in, there was already a note saying to go get the service manager to personally inspect it. He drove it into the shop himself. Hour later, multiple parts ordered, appointment to install them the next week.

I'm used to the injector noise now but on what I'll call healthy acceleration there's a point in the RPM band where there's a slight chatter sound like rocks in a box. Been there since new, before the tune, before the first oil change, etc.

Not sure the level of rattle but every inline 4 I’ve owned had a rattle to it. As the old timers in my family put it, “they’re a naturally unbalanced design, should have went with a V8”.

Hi Jacob,

I4 has secondary shaking forces and secondary firing frequency which align and make for a challenge from an NVH perspective.... V8 at 90 degrees in inherently balanced...

Best,
Phil

My issue is not vibration. It is sound. The engine, only at normal acceleration around 3000 RPM sounds like a VW TDI but quieter. Very light throttle or hard acceleration has no noise. The engine is very smooth.

Mine does the same thing. 2021 with 14,000 miles. Figured its either injector and high pressure pump clatter or turbo wastegate noise. Or 4 cylinder harmonics combined with any of the above.

I4 engines are inherently noisy, especially with direct injection and a turbo. The transmission wanting to live in 10th gear all the time for economy doesn't help either. GM twins now have a larger I4 that makes all the same noises. It might be a power house, but it will have the same issues.

Appreciate the response but have to disagree. I've owned several I4 direct injected turbo vehicles from the 2.0 Ford Escape, which was very powerful and quiet as a mouse, to BMWs and none of them made an engine noise like this. At moderate acceleration around 3000 RPM it truly sounds like I'm riding in my neighbors old VW Jetta TDI but slightly quieter.

I might not be fully understanding the noise through words. DI motors have some diesel like characteristics, but probably not enough to cause concern. Can you post a video of the sound?

I hate to break this to you, but those sorts of warranties run rampant amongst the shadiest and most crooked dealers who are generally the worst of the lot. These are literally the people Ford wants gone. Good luck and go buy a real Ford extended warranty.
You're gonna need it.
I spent 20 years at a Ford dealer, not one single aftermarket warranty was worth a crap, some better than others, but still a miserable warranty compared to Ford extended warranty.

I've mentioned it here before, I hope the line "gaskets and seals not covered" is gone from today's aftermarket warranty, that one line screwed so many people, you can't imagine.

As far as the noise goes, these engines are noisy as hell, sounds like yours has gotten louder, that means something has changed, which means something has worn or is failing.

Or by chance have you hyper focused on a normal noise? I did that with the DI rattle, after going down a rabbit hole, I finally had to concede it's normal, although some trucks are worse than others, mine is.

Good luck with it, best thing I did was drive other Rangers to compare, it sorted things right out.

I know exactly what you mean. I have the same sound. My ex-wife has a 2019 Ranger and I have a 2021. Both have the noise, but mine is louder than hers. You really have to listen for hers.

I'm pretty sure it's just increased injector and hpfp activity. When I'm running a tune, the noise is more prominent, which is why I think that. I did have a moment of panic the first time I heard it, thinking it might be knock. But, it isn't. I see no change in knock readings when the sound is present and when it is not.

I wouldn't worry much about it. Push through it and then engine and exhaust will be loud enough to cover it.
