If you wanted to fab something like that up 1/8 aluminum shaped however you like with closed cell foam sheet. There is stuff for high temp applications. Use spray adhesive and they’re bonded for good
Yup been looking down this path. The custom shaped sheet metal would just be a nice added touch to custom look. Could get it powder coated or high temp painted any choice of colors.

Maybe an untapped market I could make some money... haha

I’m confused on this.... mine came with it already on... is this a different one? Also it’s shitty foam, probably to dampen (lolz) sound? Funny thing, my Toyota cover fits the engine, just a different fastening method.

At some point they stopped shipping the trucks with them included. Pretty lame cut honestly.

Hi Tyler,

Your adjective might be inappropriat to the intent of this cover. This type of foam is very effective in noise attenuation, cleverly hidden as a engine cover. If you do not like your cover, then let forum members know and it will be snapped up PDQ. As a NVH specialist, I have quite a bit of experience with noise attenuation....Engine covers and hood blankets are very effective. So Shitty? I disagree. What do you want? Metal? Plastic? Welcome to the world of modern technology. I took my engine cover off and drove my truck around town and on the freeway...then duplicated the route with the engine cover in place... My opinion was an improvement in interior noise level. Since I have no diagnostic equipment like I had at my disposal at Ford Light Truck Engineering, I can only state this subjectively with no objective data.

My beef is that it was deleted as a cost reduction...It should have remained on the higher end trucks. A pox on the PVT manager for approving this deletion...just like the middle tie downs.

Best,

Looks like I struck a nerve... I believe I said it is probably foam to dampen noise. My “shitty” descriptor may be misused or misunderstood. I find it funny that it is no longer included stock, and I question how long it will hold up over the life of the truck being removed and replaced. It could easily be made with a hard coating on it to protect the foam. Yes the hood protects it, however repeated removals and replacing will undoubtedly lead to it being eventually damaged. My Scion had a hard composite cover that had a foam spray applied to it and it held up. The cost cutting is pretty obvious with some aspects of these trucks. Maybe I come off as shitting on the Ranger but really it’s this; this is the first brand new vehicle I have purchased from a dealer. It’s the first vehicle I have purchased that was less then 5 years old. I usually drive my vehicles until dead, my scion (last vehicle) was the only one that I didn’t drive to the recyclers. I want my truck to last, to have longevity and to not let me down and to eventually give it to my son in 4 years and have it last him so he has a good start in big boy life. I so far and do intend, to follow the recommended maintenance schedule, to not driveway mechanic it more then I have (CAI, Grille, Damper, Letters, Vellosatech scoop). I have owned 2 other fords, a Taurus SHO (amazing vehicle with a bad transmission) and a windstar (great vehicle, body fell apart) and I swore never again Ford. And as I said before the only reason I went with Ford this time was the dealer, and so far I am liking my truck.

I have owned my Ranger since December 14, 2020, it had 134km on it, and I am already going in for my 4th warranty repair, nothing huge but still... I have already had issues with the paint, the driver side wheel well trim (with the side marker light) has already come loose causing annoying whistling at speed, the window gaskets have come out, and I suspect the door ones aren’t working since whenever I put the window back up it’s got water on it. I have had a tire pressure sensor replaced within the first month of owning it. The interior of the Lariat is supposedly the top end one yet the leather is like a molecule off from being plastic. There is thread coming out of the seams in the rear seats which I have had passengers in twice, for 20 minutes or so each time. So yes shitty is where I land on certain things that appear TO ME to be shitty. Some people also are having excessive blow by, and injector failures (not me thankfully). Ford refused to give me the 40k or whatever Ford points because I activated my modem literally the day the offer would expire, even though I don’t need to use it. And the arguments with the dealership and customer service were a nightmare.

I love how it drives, the features are great and I have had the truck save my life on the highway once already (I will post the dash cam eventually). I find it comfortable for me when I drive to see my girlfriend who is 500km away one way. The lane keeping is not bad, and the adaptive cruise is easily my favourite feature. The B&O sound is great, sync 3 has some bugs but whatever I can cope. It has exactly what I need for a truck.

For whatever it is we pay (64k after loan in CAD) for me, then yes, the fact that the foam cover is extra now, makes me call it shitty. Usually Phil I appreciate your input, but in my opinion, it’s shitty foam. As for selling it, no I want it, because it’s one thing I still got that Ford isn’t giving anymore, for what the $50 to manufacture it, they mark up x3 (I’m actually making an uneducated guess). I am acutely aware of how mass production works, and this makes me think that the molds for these are old and clapped out and needed replacing and to offset that cost Ford decided to charge extra for them.

Fire away boys... I’m sure I am off to lunch on this rant.

Tyler.

Yeah I just purchased one. It is such a reasonable price and I think it finishes the engine bay nicely.
Me too. Thanks for the heads up. I know I know, it should have come with one.....it's cost cutting yada yada but hey, it is cheaply satisfying this week's truck spending bug. ;)

You can't possibly think Ford makes these themselves can you?

And why do you ASSUME it's a cost cutting measure when it's highly likely to be a Covid related supplier issue?

Also thanks for the glimpse into our economic future here. I'm sure it won't be long before Rangers hit $65k here.

I don’t doubt they have someone else make them. I also don’t doubt some things are covid related such as chip shortages etc... hell I am still waiting on rubber floor mats that I ordered in January from weather tech. I just think the foam thing is funny...

I’m not trying to be shitty, I guess I’m bitchy today. Night shifts suck.

64k CAD is about 53k US, so as you can see there are some disparities between the little line on the map.

My feeling is this, and I’m not an expert or know f all about vehicle economics, but with the Ranger pretty much the highest priced light truck (yeah yeah Honda’s and some TRD tacos get up there and the stupid gladiator is ridiculous and I hated the drive) it feels like Ford is really trying to save pennies everywhere and still charge a premium price. Even someone at my dealership laughed about “Ford Tough” when booking my 4th appointment for warranty and said I am not the only one. It’s just funny to me, my girlfriend has a 2019 escape Titanium and that thing feels well built, reliable, not like it was cheaped out on.

4th warranty appointment and all of it minor cheap things.... on a vehicle that’s what 7 months old?

Optioned the same, which is not even possible with some of the brands the Ranger is middle of the pack with it's competitors. The only midsized trucks cheaper option for option are Chevy and Nissan and they don't have some basic amenities.

I think you got the oddball lemon. Maybe you should go back to driving old shitboxes like your Scion.

You win fella. 2020 Ford Lariat FX4 with 11800km on it, mostly highway, light off road use, some added options for sale. Make an offer. ✌

I'm not your huckleberry.

I've got the same truck with fewer miles and no problems. Try Carvana or it's Canadian equivalent, I hear they're buying Rangers.
