The big thing many don't understand with Diesel Engines is how the Emissions System works and when a Diesel Makes it highest amount of Emissions(mind you it's quite different than a Gas/Petrol Engine).

For starters a Diesel makes most of the Emissions at Idle vs at load. That is why you see a lot of California Idle Stickers on Commercial Trucks with Diesel Engines. If it has the sticker from the Factory, then it is running very clean out of the Tail Pipe at Idle vs if it didn't have the Emissions Equipment.

Next is with the DPF and DOC in the Exhaust. Yes they do tend to get a bunch of buildup as you drive. The funny thing with them is that they don't get as much build up when the Diesel Engines are being loaded vs one that isn't being loaded(think of two pickups. One has a trailer loaded correctly close to max capacity and the other has no load like the typical yuppie! The pickup with the trailer will work the Diesel Engine more and make the DPF and DOC run more efficiently and not clog up as much and therefore not having to go into Regeneration as much. Keeps in Mind that Ford already did this test going from Detroit to Chicago loaded and unloaded. I don't remember the exact amount, but when. Unload the truck went into Regeneration way more often vs when it was loaded)

Another thing that usually causes the Emissions System Failure is a combination of the Owners/Operators not doing the Recommended Maintenance and shutting the vehicle off in the middle of a Regeneration(don't worry as this happens in industrial settings as well). Many seem to think it's the fault of the system when it's really a fault of the Owner/Operator.

I also want to add that with the introduction of DEF being used in the Exhaust on Diesel Engines has reduced the amount of usage of the EGR in Diesel Engines

I am deeply glad that I got out of trucking and away from diesel before all that Clean Idle Certified/DEF stuff was required on road tractors. I'm not sure I could keep up with all the different states' regulations for such things...especially CA regs.
It was bad enough trying to find truckstops that had IdleAire to plug into so as to keep from getting ticketed and booted out of hard to find parking spots.
I'm sure modern day diesels both commercial and automobile are significantly cleaner running than they used to be back in the day, and I think I would be ok with that kind of natural engineering progress without having to go further with the extra expense and aggravation of the additives.

But I'm not an engineer nor did I sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night, so what do I know.

Oh, yeah...dont forget the ice cream!!

There must be a lot of accidents involving trucks because I see several law firms repeatedly advertising for injuries related to truck accidents, if you are in CO you may have seen the "strong arm" Frank Azar on TV, billboards and so on. Personally I'm tired of seeing the same ads over and over and over. Have a friend who was hit by an out of control truck yrs back on I-70 Vail pass, serious injuries , never fully recovered and walks with a cane.

Would appear so as unregulated diesel emission carcinogenics are about 100 times more in volume. So fuel saving would need to be 99,9% in order to get to even level.
