Everytime I fuel the truck, unless it's just been washed, I can hear the dirt grinding into the paint as I push the door to open it.

another rainy day here, so can't work on my garage projects. Jeep is in the rain until I build some shelves and clear the junk. Ranger is safe and dry though.

last comment about my moab pictures and stuff. We bought the jeep liberty to get to tent camping and backpacking sites. Something we were having fun with then. Like I mentioned...I stumbled onto a friendly discussion forum about the jeep and made myself a spot. This ranger forum seems to be much the same.

Someone said "we should all meet up in moab, utah and go trail riding." It then became a distant calendar event, and for us, a long drive. But it was a lot of fun. There are good people all over the country...

I have a ton of jeep pictures...backpacking pictures. Other stuff I've had fun doing. But I don't want to wear out my welcome here. And I have some more dumb questions about the new ranger.

I'm gonna continue with the "couple of nothing" idea for a few more ranger owner questions. maybe I should begin a new topic, but this is in the same ballpark as the first question about the gas cap stuff.

I don't adapt to change very well. Later, if I learn to get used to it, I'll say it's great.

I like to do this...

ranger door key 1.jpg

my keys 2.jpg

I'm not a fan of key fobs. I understand I'm a grumpy old man. But I would rather have a slim key in my pocket.

As I understand it from reading the paperback book...I have the basic key fob. I got two of them. It doesn't do the remote start thing, and whatever else you lariat guys get. However, I can lock/unlock and start the truck with fordpass on my phone.

But I don't see much use in that yet, unless I lock myself out by losing the key fob. And I think I have to have a key in the ignition to actually drive the truck after I start it (using fordpass). So that means I need a spare key inside the truck.

I'll pause here a second to ask you...am I on the right track about this?

1...2...3...

I did not get what I call a valet key. Did you guys get one?

For the sake of discussion...

if I had no battery in the key fob, would the key in the ignition still crank the truck?

If it does, can I get a flat key made, without the bulk of the buttons?

book 1.jpg

I did not get the "save for records" key tag shown in the book above. I didn't know to ask the dealer (in Valdosta) about it. Did you guys get these?

I did ask about replacement keys, and was told they are made at ford dealers, and cost about $200.

I did ask if they made an old fashion flat key, but it was implied they don't...and I left it at that for the time being.

So...if I was king...I'd like a flat key made without the electronics. Am I SOL?

thanks, Steve

If you’re driving an XLT the fob is not going to act like a Lariat one with push button start! So in your case you can just get a flat key made and you’re done. Don’t need a Ford dealer to do it ether. Any locksmith with the proper key cutter can make spares for you with a fob delete

My '97 Escort and/or '99 Cougar had the pop-out fuel door. Just push on the dimple and it should spring open.
thank you Chris for the attachment from the manual. I have the same in paperback.

Is it easy for me to get the whole book in pdf? No...I haven't searched yet. your pages are clearer and color highlighted.

ok...so a google search for factory service manual brings up hits.

here's one...
https://www.factory-manuals.com/expand-2021-ford-ranger-repair-manual-3267.html

$90 plus $40 more if I want the electrical manual. pdf format,

I don't mind paying for it. But before I do. Do they still make them in printed book format? Easier for me to use when my hands are greasy.

Search.

There are PDF copies of a lot of the Ford Service manuals posted here somewhere.

Also remote start via FordPass works just like an old aftermarket remote start. Start via phone, approach vehicle and unlock, insert key, turn to on, and drive off.

And you prefer an old school key? Sounds like somebody has never known the joys of putting a key in your pocket in the morning and not touching it again all day.

Seriously, 99% of your questions have been covered here already.

yes, I do

I run long distance...florida...95 degrees...98% humidity.
don't want a phone or key fob in my pocket to sweat up.

10-4 boss...I'll dial it back

thanks, Steve

I just joined up and said hey on the introduction forum. Got some friendly replies.

This is gonna be pretty lame stuff, but I need to wade in and get some practice here.

I just got a 2021 XL FX4/STX crew cab. Read the paperback book over a couple nights. Put some floormats in it that were recommended by some on this forum. Really haven't had it long enough to discover much to talk about. And not at all disappointed about anything, so keep that in mind if I sound like I'm critical.

there's no effective way to open the fuel door except to get your fingernail under the lip. not difficult, but seems like an incomplete thought.

I don't have a release button in the cab. and there's no latch or spring to overcome when I open the flap. the indentation doesn't do anything. I tried pressing on it in several locations so see if I was stupid. there's no gas cap on the filler neck. that's supposed to be a good thing?

is this an XL model thing? the same on the lariats?

fuel tank seems vulnerable to vandalism...angry ex girlfriend...loser in the bowl game betting.

what was the engineering logic involved? thinking about adding a thin rubber flag/tab, with weatherstrip adhesive, on the back side of the flap.
A few months ago, I went to get gas as I usually do...and the gas door would not open! No matter where & how I pressed. What the heck??? Anyway, I left without getting gas. I was embarrassed...felt like people thought that crazy woman doesn’t even know how to put gas in her truck! Got home & my husband opened it right up with a slight push. It has not happened again & only happened that one time in almost two years. Wasn’t holding my mouth right, I guess. Still hasn’t dampened my love for my Ranger! (See what I did there @AzScorpion?):inlove:

Now Tracey has definitely stumbled onto something here! We’re going to need a mini damper for the gas cap! One push and open says-a-me!:turkey::turkey::turkey:
