Just think about how heavy wheels and tires are,OK - guess it was a silly question. It's my first pickup (loots of vans over the years) and still not used to just "tossing stuff in back" without worrying it'll fly out.

This.I'd personally strap them down if possible. They won't move on their own, but get in a wreck, they'll become 40-50lbs missiles.

Lay them down. Nothing special is needed.
Wheels with tires laid over are unlikely to come out in an accident. If they do, you probably have bigger issues.
