Who makes the nav? Garmin is the nav program that Honda uses for my 2015 Goldwing and I use Base Camp to customize routes on my computer and then import it to the 'wing. Can you customize routes on the computer and then import it into the nav on the Ranger?

I plug my iPhone in and use Google Maps through AppleCarPlay when I want to take a road trip, but when I'm just tooling around town I use the stock nav system.

I like to make custom routes as I don't always want to take the "fastest" route and I don't know the name of the towns/roads I am going through. I don't want to have to sit in the truck to make a route either.:frown:

Best option would be to use an iphone that is jailbroken and then you can car play any app you want on the screen. I use Garmin earthmate for maps when off the beaten path.

As far as customizing routes on the Ranger GPS? I guess the only way I can think of is to come up with a waypoint list and then enter those into the truck GPS. Not what you wanted to hear.

There is a critical difference between using a GPS and using Apple Maps or Google Maps. And that is the GPS has the whole country map in storage whereas the phone maps have a limited geographical area stored. It has to download map updates from time to time. The GPS doesn't. No big deal unless you're well out of cell phone coverage.

Or you download all offline maps for areas your going into and don't need cell coverage I've found that works too.

Here is what you want:
https://www.sygic.com/press/sygic-launches-web-route-planner

And here is why you cant have it.
https://www.sygic.com/blog/2018/wak...s-wants-freedom-of-navigation-in-android-auto

It going to take people complaining or leaving for Google to change.

Don't be evil right? rigggghhhhht.

It is not important now living on an island but if i was out adventuring on the mainland and out of connectivity many times, this would be important enough to me to have a look at Apple.

Hmm, this really intrigues me. I use Android, and have an map app for when I'm hiking - but it is kind of nice to see it when driving to the trailhead. Do you know if you can run Android apps under Android Auto on the main monitor? That would be quite nice if I could do that. I've never had a vehicle that did Android Auto so I have zero experience with it.

Edit: Maybe Mike's post is my answer. That would suck if that is how it plays out.

The issue is what kind of rights are allowed for the given app and carplay/ Android Auto. Most of it is a legal issue... you cannot allow for distractions while driving and using the app. So its up to the creators discretion as to what apps are allowed to be seen on the screen while moving. This is where the principle of releasing those rights via third party access takes place. If you "Jail Break" an iphone it is a process that unlocks the phone for use with apps that governing bodies have no control over. This is what allows us to use any app we choose for the carplay system. The cost of this to apple users is of course allowing an unknown and untrustworthy group access your phone for the install of said apps.

Actually, as far as this topic goes there is 0 cost to apple users. Right now they can download Sygic and enjoy offline maps and the capability to build custom routes.

If I needed the capability I would probably consider dumping android.

I was speaking in regards to jail breaking an iPhone.

Sure but you told the OP the best option was to use a jailbroken Apple phone and that isn't the case. Can use Sygic right now with no jailbreaking required.

For what he wants to do yes... I believe you are confused on the use case the OP is suggesting. “Off line maps” that Sygic offers are simply the same as what our stock nav maps contain except Sygic uses cellular data to give you traffic updates where Sync uses satellite data services. Both are just a data set for roads and relevant POI.

The OP wants to create a route.... not be suggested a route. Garmin basecamp allows you to create routes and export to devices that use a .gxp file. This allows us to use a program (basecamp) to structure what, where, and how a route will exist. I do to all the time with basecamp for hiking routes, off roading routes, and to position campsites that are not on Sygic, Sync, or any other similar navigation app or system.

This is where my suggestion of jailbreaking comes into validity. It allows the mirroring of apps such as Earthmate and Gaia to navigate via the routes we previously created or even on the fly routes. For example( view attached image), the “lake park lasso” route seen on my garmin Earthmate app does not exist on a navigation system because it’s not a road. It’s a trail and in order for me to both navigate to it and navigate on it I’d need to use an app that allows for route creation and importation. Hence my suggestion to jail break in order to mirror said app.

I hope this clarifies things for you.

Appreciate all the information, but I think the original intent has gotten lost (for me at least). I was looking for a computer program to make my routes and then import them into the GPS. Base Camp is the program that Garmin uses.

EDIT: I posted 2 seconds after Andy.
