Three statements of fact...

1 - I'm too old and tired to do that. 20 years ago and no fancy electronics and I would be up for it.

2 - I'd swap $$ for peace of mind in a heart beat.

3 - And I'm probably more frugal than 99% of the population. Note: Frugal does not equal parsimonious / selfish.

IIRC someone here a while ago attempted (or was attempting) to do it and found out it was going to be more of a hassle than it was worth. For one the electronics/computer would be a hassle getting them to work well and the 4wd/TC controller would have to be moved. Then there's the gearing and pedal and linkage controls having to be worked in.

If someone was going to attempt this they'd better have deep pockets and a lot patience. lol It might be a fun project but not something worth while trying on your daily driver. I'd recommend them using a salvage truck because it sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen.
Not as hard as you're making it out to begin. Or we have a different baseline for project difficulty :)

Maybe so, but I followed the link to the thread, and admittedly skimmed it, and it appears he traded the Ranger in for something different. I never saw where he actually completed the conversion. I'll go back and read it carefully this time around.

Update:
OK, so you were putting the Ford 2.3L drive train into your 97 Land Rover Discovery and as an aside, mentioned it would be easy to convert a Ranger. Then came to this thread and you used your Land Rover Conversion thread as a reference how how easy it would be to do the conversion on the Ranger.

I think you said it best... "we have a different baseline for project difficulty."

Maybe I'm still misunderstanding... :crazy:

Just curious. Would the tow rating be less for the manual? I see the Bronco with the manual is limited to 3500lbs but so is the automatic. The Bronco suspension is the major limiting factor for towing but just wondering how strong the manual is.
