Is there a max speed for 4H? I think I may have exceeded it. The cabin had a weird smell coming in after my runs.

When i drove through Texas during snowmageddon I was forced by the big rigs to drive 80+ on ice in 4H for hours. It was insane! I had only used 4H at speed in the snow and probably never above 40mph.

How did other vehicles force you to drive at a certain speed?

The trucks were tailgating me and i couldn't pull to the side of the road. There were numerous flipped semis along the way with contents everywhere. Gas stations and hotels had no power. I had to get somewhere that had power with it being in single digit temps.

I know with all of my older 4x4 trucks and the different models of Jeeps I have owned over the years, the manuals all stated to never exceed 45 MPH in 4 HI or 25 MPH in 4 LO. I have not looked into the 5G Ranger manual to see what it states, I just stick with not exceeding 45 MPH in 4 HI and never exceeding 25 MPH in 4 LO.

And usually if the snow/ice is bad enough that you need 4 wheel drive, it is also bad enough to keep your speeds down to 45 MPH or less.

The Ranger manual states - You can move the control between 2H to 4H at a stop or when driving up to 68 mph (110 km/h). I've seen where others have said 80-90 mph but I didn't see anywhere where in the manual that it had a max speed.

It does say that with a spare tire (or mismatched tires) you should not exceed 50 mph.

On four-wheel drive vehicles, the size of the spare tire can affect the four-wheel drive system. If there is a significant difference between the size of the spare tire and the remaining tires, you could have limited four-wheel drive functionality, added noise, discomfort and driveline damage. Due to normal tire wear, your spare tire is not necessarily the same size as your on-road tires, which makes your spare tire a dissimilar size. Use the spare tire on a limited basis only. When driving with a dissimilar wheel and tire assembly do not:
  • Exceed 50 mph (80 km/h) with a four-wheel drive mode turned on.
  • Turn on a four-wheel drive mode unless the vehicle is stationary.
  • Use a four-wheel drive mode on dry pavement.

I am not and will not go 80 in the ice and snow. NOPE. Now maybe up to 50 depending in the roads. I am a skier and drive in the snow yearly but not if it's super snowy or icy would I get even close to 60 let alone 80. That's some scary stuff.

The Ford manual is still vague. I've tested 4H to about 70mpg.

It sure is so I'm assuming there's really no limit. Otherwise they'd have specified to cover themselves. I'm sure someones tested it faster than 70. lol

I have seen TFL truck vids where they are drag racing Rangers and f150s in the quarter mile in 4hi. So........
If TFL breaks a truck it's a business expense and probably written off on the taxes.

Spent a chunk of my youth running OTR. And quite a few miles of it was in snow and ice. Goes with the job. Any driver who operated as you stated could be described as many things. But "professional driver" would not be one of them.

Insane. I can still remember days of driving for 8+ hours, finally stopping after 200 miles, maybe, shoulders knotted up from tension... and just being exhausted from the stress of slipping and sliding all day. Wind pushing you sideways on the ice. (Looking at you in particular Nebraska.) And the only reason we'd drive in those conditions was to try to drive out of the storm.

I see semi's driving crazy in bad weather, I'm out of there.

Personally I would not do it. I had mine in 4 hi up to maybe 45-50 last winter. Thats about it for 4 hi. Of course I do not think I have had my truck over 85 in 2wd since purchase.

I have driven stretch of HWY which has a 65 mph limit and done it in 4H many times. I have shifted into 4H at HWY speed without any problems.

On this HWY even with snow on it the snowmobilers will pass you like you are sitting still. They will have two sleds on the truck bed and a trailer with a couple more. Crazy!

Nonsense.
Never feel that you have to drive beyond your comfort level with the situation because somebody behind you is trying to bully you beyond it; 4 wheels or 18. 99.999% of rear end crashes are the fault of the rear vehicle. Like a marathon, you drive your own pace. If they come up behind you close, it's best to maintain your own pace and avoid sudden moves, they'll eventually go around. You are more likely to have a spinout or more serious crash driving above what you think is safe than getting rear ended.
Be alert for a temporary white out condition as semis overtake you as they kick up a wake of snow.
