A case for an extended warranty

Here is a scary story for you. I’m in the middle of a situation not with my Ranger, but with my wife’s BMW. Last Thursday she pulled up to an intersection in the car quit and engine light came on. It would semi crank, but we couldn’t get it into neutral to push it out of the intersection so the tow truck came and dragged it onto the bed and took it to the dealer we bought it from, which has done 90 percent of the work on it. Turns out that the motor cratered. They quoted me $36,000 to replace the motor in an $18,000 car. The car has 56,000 miles on it, it’s an ‘18 that has been meticulously maintained and babied. We leased it then bought it, but rolled the dice and didn’t buy the extended warranty. Now I get to go in and work something out with them on a new one. I think they will help me out, but not as much as if I had the warranty. They had to change an oil seal on the car 5,000 miles ago that required priming the oil again- if it isn’t done it can fry the motor eventually. I’m not saying it wasn’t done, but any mistakes that they make they would be paying for, not me. I fully intend to be buying an extended warranty any more vehicles in the future and will purchase one for my ranger as well. Just a cautionary tale.

I have two friends with BMWs. One trades his DD 6 series every few years, the other lives and breaths BMW. He owns two now; one a track car (he's a driving instructor at BMW get togethers) and the other is an M2, having replaced his M3.

Without prompting, both have noted the same thing. "'Get the extended warranty." Little things begin to fail shortly after the factory warranty runs out and things BMW are expensive., way expensive I have no personal experience, just repeating their comments.

Yes, and I realized that the warranty takes weight off the dealer too, because the repairs are compensated. They don’t have to deal with an angry customer on an expensive bill.

I've been buying extended warranties for awhile. last car didn't tap into it, but the one I bought for the Ranger has paid for itself already.
