there's no reason for it to use every gear unless you're heavily loaded. you'll notice it sometimes goes 1-2-4 instead of 1-3-5, depending on how you're accelerating. the jumps are pretty similar to what you'd get sequentially on a transmission with fewer gears, and the intermediate gears are there for specific conditions. (e.g., on the 6R80 the ratios are 4.2,2.3,1.5 for 1-2-3, compared to 4.7,3.0,2.1,1.8,1.5 for 1-2-3-4-5 on the 10R80. 1-3-5 on the 10R80 is very close to 1-2-3 on the 6R80.) it seems stupid to try to force it to use every gear just because they're there. hell, on a manual I'd skip gears myself depending on the situation.

as for 7, it's the 1:1 ratio--8, 9, and 10 are all overdrive. it's not uncommon for the transmission to end up there especially if you're under any load (like a hill) and/or not going really fast.

for myself I consider the 10R80 to be one of the things that puts the ranger head and shoulders above anything else in the class.
I agree I regularly would skip 2nd in my manual cars when conditions were correct. For me it’s in one specific spot when I go to my parents where it’s a slow road with a grade and it makes the jump to 3rd where i feel like it should be 2nd. I usually just put it in tow mode for this one hill. Other than that one specific stretch of road I love it lol

Hey Paul, my Ranger has about 11700km on (In Onterrible), and I have noticed it like 7th as well, and some times it’s laggy on down shifting if I have stomped on it (which isn’t often) have you noticed if it does the same thing in S mode? Where in Canada you at?
Haven't tried in S mode but

To note: If you ONLY want to see what gear you’re in, just press the ‘+’ side of the button on your driver side of the gear shift (P,R,N,D,S). It will display on your dashboard (right-hand panel on my Lariat). Pretty nifty trick I learned here….

If you press ‘-‘ instead of ‘+’ make sure to press plus again because by doing the minus starts locking out those gears, starting from 10.

I can get into 8th just doing an easy 65 kilometres per hour for a fairly short stretch. But alas, the usual timing makes me stop for at least 2, sometimes 3, red lights in pretty short distances (good ‘ole suburbia). That’s another rant for another day…. ?

Stupid question here but after owning this thing for a while I still haven’t figured out how to get the gears to display while driving. Any help? I tried searching and didn’t find anything helpful.
In D you can cancel out gears. I go minus 4 times for roads like 45mph. But in S mode, don't touch unless you're prepared to use +/- as a gear shifter.

Haven't tried in S mode but

Sorry what does the "direct" mean?
"Direct" Means it is a 1 to 1 ratio. For every rotation the engine makes - the output shaft of the transmission makes 1 revolution.

I have a tough time understanding when folks say the ranger 10 speed "hunts" for gears because mine feels like, if anything, it holds a gear very well, even too long at times. It pulls hills and doesn't always downshift as much as other vehicles I've experienced. I know, S mode makes it downshift sooner and/or stay in a lower gear. Of course all this power and down low torque helps with what I see as a lack of hunting. Its a great feeling transmission though!

My 2C on this. As others have already mentioned 7th is the 1:1 gear. If you keep your revs right I found you can also squeak out bonus mileage here. A sweet spot so to say. 8 and 9 are right there with it if speed dictates their use.

Now when I first got the truck I had that learning curve too. Lots of lugging, hunting etc. Then I started locking out gears I didn’t want to get to. Learned much since then. Truck rarely hunts now, shift points are more predictable and I believe that driving in this manner has had the truck “learn” this is the way I want to behave.

Try it you’ll like it!

Mine just seems to go into "Get There!" regardless of speed...;)

Agreed. It shifts a lot, as you would expect a close ratio 10 spd to do. It does not hunt.

I love this truck, however the more I drive it however I have some concerns with the transmission.

It is often seeking gears(makes sense when there are 10 of them haha) I have noticed lately though that it seems to stick in 7th often regardless of upshift or downshift. Also a super abrupt 2nd to 1st downshift.

Truck has 5k (sorry Canada talk...3100 ish miles) and tows a 2500lb trailer once or twice a month.

Thoughts?

Paul

Soo turns out my transmission concerns were for a reason. Took my truck in for its first service and they discovered that the fluid was 1.5 liters below where it should be!?

They could not find evidence of any leaks and figure "it must have left the factory like that". Yikes.

Is much better now:like:

Interesting. I have 1k miles on my 2020, and I notice it wants to 'land' on 7. I just tap the gas pedal and it bounces out. Guess I should have them check it.

My local dealer left a really bad taste in my mouth. They are half mile away from me, and I was trying to buy a truck from them. They showed me a sticker for one they 'could get', and I finally bit. When I showed up to buy it was a completely different truck, and one I had already driven at another dealer. I walked out, and then found one I wanted over 2 hours away and bought it. Really pissed me off.

Long story short, I don't trust the local dealer, but I'm not driving 2-3 hours to have it serviced.

I would say the searching for a gear is the most annoying thing in the truck. I can live with it, going up the windy hills to my parents i usually just push the tow button and it shifts like I feel it should naturally with the conditions. I don’t like how when it’s not in tow mode it skips 2nd gear all together and goes 1st to 3rd it makes for a longer shift and when it goes in gear you get a big rpm drop. Little annoyance but seems a tune will be in my future.
mine does the same even with the tune. but gear hunts less after tune. still skips 2nd most times.

I found it hard to get use to the low end torque with the ecoboost in my van.
But after driving it a while, the Ranger holding higher gears longer seemed normal.
