I love this truck, however the more I drive it however I have some concerns with the transmission.

It is often seeking gears(makes sense when there are 10 of them haha) I have noticed lately though that it seems to stick in 7th often regardless of upshift or downshift. Also a super abrupt 2nd to 1st downshift.

Truck has 5k (sorry Canada talk...3100 ish miles) and tows a 2500lb trailer once or twice a month.

Thoughts?

You have to make some sacrifices with that free healthcare. You might have to spend more time in 7th for example?
Haha I think that's it! I'm not too worried but thought I'd throw it out there

I referred to it as "gear hunting". Especially bad on interstate hills.

A tuner fixed this (doesnt matter was fuel grade tune you get) for me along with the sluggish electronic controlled throttle. Now it goes if I use my big toe on the pedal and it doesn't have a computer herp derp moment when shifting.

I would say the searching for a gear is the most annoying thing in the truck. I can live with it, going up the windy hills to my parents i usually just push the tow button and it shifts like I feel it should naturally with the conditions. I don’t like how when it’s not in tow mode it skips 2nd gear all together and goes 1st to 3rd it makes for a longer shift and when it goes in gear you get a big rpm drop. Little annoyance but seems a tune will be in my future.

Hey Paul, my Ranger has about 11700km on (In Onterrible), and I have noticed it like 7th as well, and some times it’s laggy on down shifting if I have stomped on it (which isn’t often) have you noticed if it does the same thing in S mode? Where in Canada you at?

The 1-3 shift can be annoying, but it is most often the best thing to do when entering cross-traffic traffic from a dead stop. Shifting takes time, and slows your acceleration.

there's no reason for it to use every gear unless you're heavily loaded. you'll notice it sometimes goes 1-2-4 instead of 1-3-5, depending on how you're accelerating. the jumps are pretty similar to what you'd get sequentially on a transmission with fewer gears, and the intermediate gears are there for specific conditions. (e.g., on the 6R80 the ratios are 4.2,2.3,1.5 for 1-2-3, compared to 4.7,3.0,2.1,1.8,1.5 for 1-2-3-4-5 on the 10R80. 1-3-5 on the 10R80 is very close to 1-2-3 on the 6R80.) it seems stupid to try to force it to use every gear just because they're there. hell, on a manual I'd skip gears myself depending on the situation.

as for 7, it's the 1:1 ratio--8, 9, and 10 are all overdrive. it's not uncommon for the transmission to end up there especially if you're under any load (like a hill) and/or not going really fast.

for myself I consider the 10R80 to be one of the things that puts the ranger head and shoulders above anything else in the class.

Stupid question here but after owning this thing for a while I still haven’t figured out how to get the gears to display while driving. Any help? I tried searching and didn’t find anything helpful.

Hi Sam,

touch the side button on the shifter and the gears will appear right of center on the dash

Just hit the +/- on the shifter while in drive. Will show next to the speedo.
