Just got a quote from the only shop I trust to work on my cars. Plan was trans and diff at 30k. I don't have anywhere truly flat to drop the pan then make 100% sure the fluid is right afterwards

Does that sound right? Most of the cost is labor.

Might take a shot at this myself at that cost if it is, yikes.... Ill fell better about doing myself once the reasonably priced dipstick is ready. Hell I might be able to get the stick and the bigger metal pan for what they want.

$700 was trans only. I planned on doing the diff.

Does that include a replacement pan? As I hear those are plastic and one use only and that you need a new one after removal. Better to go with the PPE cast aluminum pan, so I hear.

Just the filter, gasket, and oil. All Ford parts and not aftermarket. Now they did quote 12 quarts and explained they would only use/charge what dropped out and it wouldnt be 12 for sure... but still.

These guys have always been fair up until this quote. Thinking of spending that labor money on the pan with a drain and a dipstick if the cheaper option is available. If I had a real dipstick I'd feel better about doing that work myself.

Be advised that the fluid is expensive. If not mistaken it's around $20 a quart not counting the markup the shop might be charging (depending on where he got it there may not be much of a discount).

Total is just shy of 700 after taxes. It will be a bit cheaper as a spill and fill won't come close to 12 quarts...

(Note I don't have a skid plate, but I doubt that adjusts book hours much)

I'd personally wait for Fitz and get the PPE pan for that amount of money.

I think I am going that direction. It's that stupid nubby dipstick that bothers me as far as getting the level right. That and I would not mind having the extra capacity and metal under it vs the plastic.

You can double check but I'm pretty sure you don't have a skid plate for the transmission. I don't think any Ranger has a skid plate for the transmission from the factory. That said the cost breakdown that you gave seems about right

I was gonna talk to them about that if I went that direction. I have no skid plates of any sort. It is an XLT with the only option being keyed remote start (really like that option btw. App is too wonky)

I dont even have tow hooks.

I added the running boards and other stuff later.

Some packages do include a transmission skid plate, I had one from the factory (Lariat FX4). It's not great, but would protect against some scrapes and minor contact. I only know this because I removed mine for Shrockworks plates, and laughed at the factory piece.

I'm curious if you have a picture of it. This is the first time I've heard of a transmission skid plate from the factory. I knew about the transfer case skin plate which is kind of silly but nothing about the transmission
