Don't beat yourself up, you would think a 40k truck would last, unfortunately, in 2026 its close to impossible to buy quality in vehicles. I really don't know what im going to do after my Ranger. I hate all modern vehicles for quality and cheap plastic.
Yeah im not too torn up about it. Actually surprised ive made it this far without real issues. And I was thinking of trading in the next couple years any how. Not sure for what though, like you said everything is junk anymore. Maybe a 6g? Are those having issues as well?

Anybody know if a 5g softopper will fit a 6g ranger?

This is my first post on this forum. Please forgive me if I broke any rules.

2019 Ford Ranger Lariat with advanced tow package. Prior to the recent transmission rebuild everything was stock.

Purchase History:
  • prior owner was the local ford dealer (never sold to customer).
  • 20,500 miles on Aug 2020 (High Mileage at it's age).
    • service history was clean with good service intervals.
  • As far as I can tell it it's never towed anything (trailer hitch paint was not scratched)
Service History since I owned it:
  • All normal service intervals by the book with the exclusion of the following:
    • 30k changed all drive-train related fluids
    • 60k transmission fluid changed again
  • Warranty expired at 80K
Problem history:
I live in the Application Mountains, surrounded by state-owned forests and poorly maintained roads. I primarily use the Ranger in cold weather and for 4WD in snow drifts.

I first reported an intermittent stalling problem to my local dealer when the truck was cold; over time it worsened to near-total failure and created genuinely dangerous situations. My home is near the top of the highest mountain in the area, so local temperatures are roughly 10°F colder than the cities where the dealerships are located. After the truck passed 60K miles, the issue became much more noticeable, and the dealers' repeated inability to diagnose it felt like negligence.

My driveway exit onto the main road is about a mile of tar-and-chip with a blind entrance onto busy 50+ mph traffic up a steep, roughly 20° hill—so leaving requires accelerating hard and hoping the truck performs. This stop and start is when the truck would "stall"... originally manifested it's self as a minor hesitation progressing to a full 5+ second death stop (more details below).

Timeline of the BS:
  • 35K miles: Reported intermittent stalling/hesitation when cold during hard acceleration while making a turn; dealer could not reproduce. Warming the truck for 15+ minutes prevented the problem.
  • 40K: Same issue reported; dealer unable to reproduce.
  • Summer: No problem.
  • Winter, 55K: Same issue reported; dealer unable to reproduce.
  • Summer: No problem.
  • Winter, ~60K: Same issue, more noticeable; dealer unable to reproduce. Escalated to service manager without resolution; a second local dealer also could not reproduce.
  • Summer: No problem.
  • Winter, ~75K: Issue very noticeable; warming sometimes no longer fixed it. Escalated again with no effect.
  • Summer: No problem.
  • Winter, 79K: Problem extremely noticeable and dangerous—when first pulling out the truck can stop for about five seconds (stall???), then the rear tires chirp violently when accellerating; almost feels like the rear end is going to get ripped out of the truck. On cold days I will not drive it for safety. While driving on warmer days, the transmission gear selector shows irregular shifting: skipping gears (e.g., 4→7, 3→5, 3-7) with no clear pattern. I now believe the "stalling" I initially reported was actually the transmission shifting into an incorrect high gear and taking a long time to downshift to the proper gear
    • DEALER NOT ABLE TO REPRODUCE ISSUE. BULL S####
  • Spring 2026, problem very reprodusable and scary to drive in warm wather.
  • 84K miles gave up arguing with ford.
84,000 Miles, Transmission rebuilt
All parts upgraded to those compatible with F-150. The local shop who performed the work also provided a lifetime warranty and are known locally for quility work and standing behind the warrenty.

The shop said the OEM parts shown signs of poor original manufacturing as the non-worn surfaces where rougher then he expected. The clutches shown high wear and the valves had heat discoloration. Don't quote me on this last part but the "shaft???" that should be smooth was corse (bad machine work from factory). I have a box of old parts and I will try to post pictures in a different thread.

Parts:
  • New Clutches
  • DRVM
  • Shell
  • Pump
  • Valve Body
  • New Torque Converter
After about 500 miles the transmission is still shifting smooth. We will see what it's like this winter when it drops below freezing or -10F?
Very similar timeline for my 2019 Lariat also. Gave up on it 79k
